80s blazers!

My mom gave me these two great blazers she had from the early 90s, 80s, who knows. They are both wool, one is a cute houndstooth, and I really want to wear them. Except that they are way too big (wide and long) on me, and have shoulder pads and really broad shoulders. Does anyone have any idea how to find a pattern for altering them to actually fit me? I'd like a shorter, more tailored blazer out of them, if that's possible. I'm worried because I've never sewn such heavy-duty fabric, but I will try!
