a few months ago I posted asking for help with bleaching out a stencil for my friend who I wanted to give a "masculine" wicked (the musical) hoodie to...I finally got around to it, and I'm pretty excited about it! overall, it was a learning experience, but I'm pleased.

I actually hate this picture of it because the flash made the bleach look much more significant than it is. The one where I'm wearing it is more realistic. Also, please ignore my ridiculous face.

step by step with (big) pics after the cut!

the stencil I used was from stencilry.org, which was referred to me by someone here, so thank you!

first, I flipped it to a mirror image in photoshop, and ran a piece of contact paper through my printer, paper backing side up. Once that was done, I used an exacto to cut out all of the parts that I wanted to bleach.

after lots of measuring and making an outline for the whole design, I placed it on the back of the hoodie

with a towel in the middle of the sweatshirt, i put it in my tub and sprayed it with a mixture of about 75% bleach, 25% water. Here's where my learning experience came in, as I didn't test the spray bottle before I used it, and after I started spraying it was a much more uncontrollable "misting" type bottle than the spritz or spray that I was hoping for, which gave it a less speckled effect. Oh well. I let the bleach set for a while...

after letting the bleach sit for about 5 to 10 minutes (I might have let it sit for a little longer, but I really liked the burgandy/reddish color I was getting and didn't want to take my chances. I submerged the whole sweatshirt in water and peeled the contact paper off, then let it sit for a little while so that I could get the bleach rinsed out while I had to wait for a washing machine in the commons building (ugh, campus housing as a grad student is more annoying than as an undergrad) Then I washed it, dried it, and voila!

yay! I hope this made sense, it's the closest to a "tutorial" I think I could get but if you have questions, let me know :)
