craftgrrl | self portrait and more!

This is my first semester taking an art class (FINALLY). I'm actually studying to become a mechanical engineer and taking an art class is my fun stress relief... with credit :D

Our first project was to make a non-representational self portait (can't carve a statue of yourself) out of wood. I chose to base mine off of the story of Rumplestitskin. The scene i chose was when she was faced with an impossible task (straw into gold) and a little magic man comes to her rescue and does the impossible. I'm starting to feel bogged down and very insecure about by my classes and I wonder how I can even get through these courses. I use homework into straw and the gold represnts the good grades that I sometimes magically obtain. I have no magic man with a hard name to spell so there is no connection between the gold tread and the wheel.

And since I'm a mechanical engineer, I changed the spinning wheel into a water mill. Last semester our Intro Mech. class had to make a water mill and the wheel design is based off of the final project we had to do (but it was ugly and sharp)

Check out how round and smooth everything is... I LOVE FINE GRAINED SANDPAPER!

The paint job too has another backstory. It's mainly about how I feel about my appeareance. Unpolished, unfinished, but still in the process of getting better.

And the walls of the art project is on a hinge (I'm going to use it as a displace corner) and it is a decopoge of my old homework. 8D

It's made out of pine wood. It smelled nice and it was soft to work with... made gouging it easier. (The wood is very distressed underneath.. but i forgot to take pictures of it's underbelly :D oops!)

By the way, the shirt is a reconstruction! (i'll post pictures of that later.)
