Confirmation that I have the best job ever
Jun. 7th, 2007 02:15 pmIt's completely dead at work since our season has ended I'm allowed to do whatever I like to pass the time. Luckily, I used part of the shop budget for a new sewing machine--and of course I need to learn how to use it before the fall semester...

Project Notes:
Pattern: the bodice is from Vogue Patter 8034, the skirt I pattterned myself.
Material: 100% silk panel print purchased at Mood Fabrics, NYC
Comments: I learned to take my time on prep work and cutting due to a cutting disaster in which I irrevocably ruined 3/4 of a yard of material. Almost had a panic attack when I thought I'd need to go back to Mood for more fabric (it was $18/yard). Luckily I got the rest of the pieces cut out with a scant 3/8 inch to spare!
I'm a much better seamstress thanks to this dress, which required some intense concentration while sewing (slippery) and some complicated seaming (flat fall seams and french seams) The pattern isn't matched in the upper back and along the side seams of the skirt, but I don't have to see it and I got the front seam that I'll see all the time perfect.
I also learned the basics of the invisible zipper, but I put it in by hand because many of my previous clothing projects have been ruined by zippers- handsewing it is much more comfortable for me.
Also, if you have a chance, go to Mood. Not because of Project Runway, but because its a wonderland of fabric.
Finally, it fits great and for all the trouble the silk caused me, there really is nothing that feels like it on your skin, I love it!
Thanks for looking!
