Framing a Canvas Oil Painting

craftgrrlI've searched the archive and done the LJ Seek thing, and I can't find any information on how to frame a canvas painting so I hope someone can help me.
A dear friend and fellow dog lover commissioned an oil painting of my dog. It arrived rolled up and I have no idea how to prep it for the frame. I can make the frame to fit anything, but I thought the painting would come as a canvas stretched over a framework like you buy in the store. Should I use a spray adhesive to mount it on a thin board material first? Or would that ruin it?
