Stone carving / runes
Sep. 2nd, 2007 01:18 pmHey ladies & etc.,
I collected some stones from a beach that I'd like to make into a rune set. I'm wondering specifically if I should try to use my wood chisel or my dremel to make the markings. The last time I carved stone with my dremel, some stones ate my metal bit down to a nub. The chisel would be easier (straight lines), but I think it might ruin the chisel, and if it does it will probably do it on the first try.
I don't know what kind of stones they are, but here's a picture if it helps at all.

What do you think, chisel or dremel? If dremel, what bit? Also, should there be anyone who knows a decent amount about making runes, I would love to ask you some more specific questions.
Thanks lovelies!
Edited to add: Thanks for the advice, I think you're absolutely correct that the chisel would have been useless/damaged against stone. I obviously used the wrong bit last time when carving, because it turned out great this time. Here's a bunch of pictures with some notes on the process, for anyone who's interested in following along. I'll update it as I go. Thanks again!
