embroidery question, tips?

i haven't done any embroidery since i was a girl, so i'll be rusty... i want to embroider a couple cardigans but they're knit and stretchy so before i jump in blindly i was wondering if any of you had some tips? i haven't settled on any patterns yet, i'm assuming i'll have to use a stabilizer? i ran through the memories already, i just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions before i proceed. thanks : )
