Amigurumi question

For those of you who have done the bird/cockatiel pattern in the Amigurumi books (volume 3 I think?), what did you use to make the rosy cheeks and crest? Did you just use a very lightweight yarn/thread, or something else? I tried using embroidery floss once, but it didn't work so good, so I'm looking for ideas.
