who remembers making pot holders with a plastic/metal loom and sock tops (is that what they where!?)

i want to do this but using old t-shirts! i have a problem when they are still loops (the t shirt) they are huge! i don't want to cut them and have to tie them (like they way some people use plastic bags for knitting)
how should i make smaller loops with out having to tie them?
should i cut them and sew them?

also should i also try this http://lindamade.wordpress.com/2007/08/28/hot-stuff-patchwork-oven-mitts/

but do you think i could use quilt stuffing instead of the nonflammable stuff? (this is just a safety question)

thanks in advance!
