Sewing Knickers

Has anyone made their own fencing knickers? I am about to cut mine out and I was looking for any pointers. Mine will be made of heavy canvas (thicker than denim), doubled in the front of the legs, with ten extra inches of fabric attached to the waist so that they come up to the bottom of my ribs. I plan to make them close under my knees with velcro tabs, and I'm pretty sure I will be able to lunge in them. Does anyone have any websites to direct me to, or any books? Alumni of my team have apparently done this with success. I am not by any means competing on any high level, where FIE might complain. Right now, anything will be better than the too-large one size fits all knickers I have been using. And best of all, I preshrunk my fabric with fiery heat so that I don't have to air dry them ;-)

Also, any directions for a home made plastron would be nice. I could prolly figure it out, but I'm a bit lazy right now.
