zipper disaster

craftgrrlOk, so I need the expertise of some seamstresses..
My Halloween costume is ALMOST finished.. all I have to do is install the zipper, but it isn't working out. I have tried about 4 times and the fabric keeps bunching up and blah blah I just can't do it. SOOOO, I was wondering if you have any other suggestions for fasteners. I was thinking hook and eyes, the slit is about 16inches long. And how in the world do you install them? Is it pretty self explanatory?
Also, the reason the zipper is being so difficult is because the whole dress is already put together and I cant fit the back of the dress with the zipper through my machine because of the neck of the dress. Any who here's a picture of the front of the dress-
