Sewing Machine recommendation

I need your help crafty folks!  I have a very plain old sewing machine that I bought at Walmart.  It doesn't do everything I would like and I want to get a new one.  I need to find one that has lots of stitch options and can sew through thick layers of fabrics (like heavy vinyl).  Can anyone tell me what to get for around $200?  I have no idea what a good brand or model would be...
