Photo help!

craftgrrlI have a shit-ton of pictures on my digital camera. I really want to experiment with the colors of the photos. Something like making the pic black and white with only a flower or something in color. I have used my google-foo (and checked the memories) to research free downloads but the problem is I have no idea what to call that kind of editing. And I don't want to junk up my computer with useless downloads. Does anyone know of good FREE programs that I can use? Thanks in advance!
