This past weekend my best friend came to visit so we went a little crazy making Christmas ornaments. The whole project started out as a fun craft for my almost 3 yr old daughter, but it wasn't long before she was over it while we were just getting started!

I was able to free hand the unicorn and the letters, the rest we made using cookie cutters. The phoenix was a happy accident. I was trying to put feathers on the angel's wings and suddenly it looked like a bird! So I smooshed the angel's head and halo together to make the phoenix head and beak. We really liked the phoenix so we made a couple more.

My friend painted peacock colors and my husband painted the other. Any suggestions for colors on the third? I want to try and freehand some flames on the body with a red head, but I'm not sure what to do with the wings. Should I make the body yellow so the red/orange flames will stand out more or should the body be a darker color and make the flames yellow?

Just a couple more. I love the starfish~My friend painted that one. The twisted one on the right was inspired by a new line of ornaments with a candy theme we saw at Target. We tried to make ribbon candy ornaments, but it didn't work very well with the dough we were using, so we just twisted the colors together. I still need to put faces on the gingerbread kids and I want to tie their hands together with ribbon so it looks like they are holding hands. We used food coloring gels to color the dough, water based art paints (crayola) to paint the ornaments, and fabric glitter paint for the shiny glitter accents.  We had a blast! It was super easy and so much fun I had to share.

Dough recipe:
2 cups flour ~1 cup salt ~1 cup water~2 tablespoons veg. oil
stir until blended then knead until smooth
roll out to 1/4-1/2 inch thick (the thicker they are the longer they will have to bake)
cut out shapes using cookies cutters or a blunt knife
bake at 250 F for 1-2 hrs (ours took 1 hr 20 min)
paint when completely cooled
