crochet edge

craftgrrlhello ladies and gents -
Does any one have a good tutorial for doing a crochet edge on something knitted? I made a hat with earflaps, but the stockinette is making it curl more than i thought it would so I want to add an edge, but i'm not sure how. I don't really know to crochet. i also tried to pick up stitches, then bind them off, but it looked pretty crappy.
