could you make appliques and iron ons out of flannel material?

Is there any reason you could or couldn't? I saw some gorgious hello kitty flannel and I'd love to cut the kitties out and making iron ons out of them. I also have tons of flannels that'd probably be cute for iron ons and appliques.  How about fleece can you make them out of fleece, I don't think so  because the type of material it is.
