Headboard help!!!!

craftgrrlmy friend and i are making a headboard for her new room. as far as cutting the wood, using the batting, and upholstering, we're all set. but i was wondering if anyone knew how we should go about getting this look:
she wants to do like a diamond shape with the imprint. we're just not sure how to do it. should we use our staple gun and cover the staples with buttons? thats what we were thinking
any advice would be great
