A nice green tote is what I ended up making for her. It is lined with plaid, and has a very sturdy outside fabric that reminds me of bamboo for some reason...

the fabric tie you see there can be removed and stored in a pocket.

I took a chance and didn't use a pattern. (I usually don't for most things)
