A question and a TON of pictures.
Nov. 3rd, 2008 01:02 pmOk, I'll start with the question first.
Since my son has died, we have a room filled with all of his baby things.
As of right now they're all just sitting there, collecting dust.
We don't want to get rid of them, because we plan on having another baby one day, but we also feel that some things, like his onesies, will never be able to be used by another baby.
My pseudo mother-in-law came up with the idea of taking his onesies and making a quilt out of them, and using his receiving blankets as the backing. I love the idea, but I've never quilted before.
Now, my question is, how do I quilt them, without that special fancy quilting foot?
I have a sewing machine, but I just have the regular foot.
I'm thinking of cutting the onesies up into squares, and sewing them all together without any fancy pattern or anything, but then how do I attach the backing to the onesies?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
And also, I've been meaning to post pictures here for a while.
Everyone loved what I did in my son's nursery (I posted the pics here before he was born), and since his death I have decided to go into business making custom nursery decor in his honor.
10% of all the proceeds are going to an organization that works with Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units that make beautiful keepsakes for grieving parents. We were given a cast of his feet which was wrapped in a handmade quilt that had his name embroidered, and then placed inside a hand painted box. All the work is done by volunteers and is usually paid for out of their pockets, so I'm hoping to be able to help them out.
Anyway, on to what I've been making!
(And don't worry. I know better than to spam you guys with links to my etsy and whatnot.)
I made another stick mobile, but the pictures didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, so I'll have to post that after I've taken some new pictures.
However, I have also made some mobiles made from upcycled objects.
A mobile made out of vinyl records and cassette tapes.

The cassette tapes were hand-painted with acrylic paint in fun colors and funky patterns, and a stuffed over-sized music note hangs down in the center.

The original artist's information was painted over, and replaced with the words "Lullabye Records".

Close ups of the tapes.

I also made a mobile out of an old hardcover book and hand-stuffed felt wormies.
I call it "Book Worm". :)

The worms all have googly eyes and a felt smile to make them unique and individual.

And don't worry. I make it a point to tell parents that the worms are NOT a toy, and to not let their babies play with them. The mobile looks adorable above a crib, but will not be so cute in a little one's mouth.
Next is another upcycled hardcover book that I turned into a picture frame.

Fits a standard 4x6 picture, with thick acetate trimmed in gold ribbon covering the front to keep the photos safe from the elements.

Baby pictures of yours truly not included. ;)

The back is lined with soft gray felt to keep photos in place.

Next are 3 pieces I did for a commission.
A recycled stick wall letter. "K"

Wrapped with light blue yarn and dark blue embroidery floss, and then wire wrapped by hand to give dimension, with light blue and dark blue beads for sparkle.

Next is a painting done on recycled cardboard with a felt sailboat.

Tan yarn wraps around the mast for detail.

Hand braided tan yarn acts as a hanger.

And finally, a recycled cd caterpillar.
All the cd's were hand-painted with non-toxic acrylic paint.

Thanks for looking grrls!
Sorry if there were too many pictures.
