Altering Boots

I made the mistake of ordering these boots online without trying them on.

The problem? The calves are WAY too loose on me (about 3 inches of extra room).

Can anyone think of a fairly simple way to take them in? I don't think my sewing machine is strong enough for two layers of faux leather plus lining. I wonder if I could cut along the back seam, take it in and secure with some kind of glue?

I'd really appreciate any ideas! Thanks!
