Sewing Machine

My husband is going to get me a sewing machine for Christmas, We're looking for something under 150$ or close to it. Any suggestions as to what we should get. I've been searching on Walmart.com & Jo-Ann Fabrics Online, I'm at a loss as to what's a good one & which ones are just plain crap, reviews are sometimes helpful, but I'm not into always going off reviews considering sometimes you only get the bad because people don't write reviews if it's good!? ya know...!? anyway any suggestions/advice would be great.

Ps I plan on using it for: Altering clothing, maaaybe making new clothing, creating stuffed animals & other just basically random projects. ;)

Just wanted to thank the ladies that responded, my husband and I are looking through all ur suggestions. I took a gander on craigslist and didn't find poop, most of them were old and need fixing, but it would of been so cool to have one of the antique ones that are the hide away inside the table. I actually have one in my bedroom, but the cables are all ruined, I currently use it as a vanity. :(

Anyway we're going to go take a look at jo-ann fabrics, target & bed bath and beyond! I'm so excited! thanks for all your suggestions & advice! :)
