Painting Glass

I've been collecting mason jars for a while because I love using them for glasses.  I've decided that while their shape is beautiful, their color is a little lacking.  So I'm going to paint them, but I'm not sure what sort of paint to use.  The paint would both have to be safe-ish (would rather it not have lead in it even though it's just the outside that's getting painted) and be resilient enough not to come when run through the dishwasher. 

Does anyone have any suggestions on what kind of paint?
