I finished my first purse today!
It took about 5 hours or so because I was kind of making it up as I went along, not to mention the fact that I don't have a sewing machine.
I basically took two pieces of fabric the "good" fabric and the lining. I cut them to the same size and folded them over with the lining fabric on the outside, then I sewed up the sides leaving about two inches at the top, then I folded the good fabric over at the top and sewed it down. I turned it right side out so the good fabric was on the outside and then sewed on the handles and buttons. I still need to put in some velcro or something to hold the purse closed.
Next time I'll use a more canvasy fabric for the lining so the purse will keep it's shape better when held by the straps.

I've been working on a project tonight with square sheets of foam and now that I'm almost done I have all of these leftover pieces of foam. The sheet was an inch thick, and I have a bunch of pieces - some are maybe only an inch square, while others are maybe two inches by five inches. In short, lots of shapes and sizes. I now have a shopping bag full of foam scraps that I don't want to throw away if I can do something with them.

Any ideas?

It's the kind of foam that you would use to make a cushion for a chair, etc...

Hello ladies. I have an interesting project that will be commencing in about 2-3 hours, when I get off work, and was wondering if any of you fabulous crafty folks had any suggestions.

Here's the deal--> I'm going to a formal event tonight (fancy-pants fundraiser) and need something formal to wear. I don't have any fancy dresses, but I do have a really nice black top. I also can't just go out and buy a ball skirt because (a) they are expensive and (b) I am really tall so they always end up too short. So, I decided to make a ball skirt. Rather than buy all the material and stuff, I decided to buy a dress from a thrift store and just cut off the top. I found a lovely (albeit too big) empire waisted dress that would be perfect (I needed an empire waist dress so that I can make the waist higher and therefore the skirt will be longer).

Any hints on how I should go about doing this? I plan on cutting off the top of the dress just under the empire waistline, and then hemming the top and adding some elastic inside and a waistband of some sort. The dress-soon-to-be-skirt is a maroon color and my top is black. There's a zipper up that back that will remain in part.

This will be my biggest project to date, and of course, it needs to be done by this evening! Ack! Please help! Design ideas, practical ideas (how to make a waistband?), and any other ideas are all welcome. Thanks!

[stolen from How2 Zine #1]

Step 1 - Choosing An 8-Track:
Rummage through music bins at local thrift stores. look for a tape that has three openings in it's front [more easily seen as holes on the back]. Both halves of the tape, as well as the label, should be securely intact.

Step 2 - Taking An 8-Track Apart:
To separate this particular type of 8-Track tape into halves, first locate the bonding sites on th front of the tape. These are the three little holes [more rectangular] where the two halves of the cassette are fused together. A small plastic nub should be visible inside each hole. Using a thin, flat blade screwdriver, push the nub in the top hole CAREFULLY toward the center of the tape while GENTLY pulling apart the two halves. With a little finesse, the top part of the tape should separate into two pieces. Use the same procedure to unhook the locks in the lower right and left hand corners of the tape. Remember to push he nubs toward the center of the tape while you GENTLY pull apart each corner.

Step 3 - Inside An 8-Track Tape:
Once you've separated your cassette into halves, remove the spool of tape & the spongey pressure pad. Set everything aside. Next, glue rollers into place [i used hot glue] & encircle them with a small loop of tape [again with the hot glue]. This preserves the realistic look of your tape.

Step 4 - Putting Your Safe Back Together:
To close your safe, simply align the two halves and press together until they snap into place.

note: i broke my tape's nubs and therefore it won't close. BE CAREFULL! other than that all i changed was using hot glue rather than elmers as suggested. it dries quicker and allows better for hiding =) GET THIS ZINE! it has many crafty things to do. you can buy issue 1 & 2 at ScreamQueen Distro!!!

So my Asian-themed Oscar Party has since morphed into a Fiesta-themed one (I decided to go as Frida Kahlo). For favors, I'm making each guest a custom set of marble magnets. I wanted to put them in these, but I'm worried the marbles will be too heavy.

Has anyone made these things before?

i just made a record bowl. i'm thinking i'd like it to be more like a gift basket, not like a place to hold candy. any ideas on what to put in it that would fit? (noncrafty and crafty ideas are welcome!) :)

I know this isn't exactly what this forum is about, but it is *a* craft. I made this nail by hand the other day at a blacksmiths shop. It was a lot of fun! I think I am addicted to metalcraft!

I reallllly like this community, but I was wondering, does anyone else know of any DIY communties, or websites, specializing in DIY furniture, i've really became interestated in buying old crappy furniture, and remodeling it all. I'm really into stuff like, skulls, cherries, bats, polka bots, and I LOVE the colours red, white and black..
I'm moving into a new house, and would love to start this project soon...

any links, or any help would be great. thx. <3333
