I found this old wooden cigar box the other day, and I'd love to turn it into a jewelry box for my mom for her birthday next Thursday. I know how I want to fix the inside (simply felt glued nicely into place), but I have no clue as to what to do with the outside. Any ideas?

I got some bamboo and those plastic poster hanger things. My boyfriend and I bought a pretty long print a while back for his room, but we couldn't find a frame for it so I suggested we get sticks of bamboo and cut off the white borders (or most of the 2 inch white border) and make it look like one of those scroll things that hang over a display area in formal Japanese rooms.

So I went to the craft store and bought 30" sticks of bamboo. I'm going to cut one of them in half and paint it black. Then I plan to attach the poster hangers to the back and get some nice tapestry rope to tie to the ends of the top piece of bamboo.
Hopefully it will come out okay.

ANY SUGGESTIONS????

Hi everyone --

A friend here at work is in need of decorating ideas for a corner fireplace she is having installed. She has tried HGTV's site and a few others, but hasn't turned up anything useful to her yet. She would like to be able to view what others have done, if that's at all possible. I told her I'd mention her plight here and see if anyone has some info. that might be helpful.

Thanks in advance...

i bought a white knitted beanie that has a visor on it, im gathering the visor is just a piece of plastic with a simple knit stitch encasing it. but i want to know if it would be possible to dye this a brown color. im not really one for wearing a lot of white, plus it will get all dirty. i dont want to ruin it, so i needed some advice on how to go about this process. thanks so much for your help!

Books

I am at the library right now looking up craft books and beading books and what not...

I found a really cool one called The Beaded Object byt Mary Jo Hiney

So far it seems to be a pretty kick butt book. There is close to 100 projects in there (if not more). And some of the projects are different beaded flowers and there is even a beaded wreath in there. I think that is cool. It is definitely a cool book.

I just though I would share...thanks for listening to my ramblings

my third crocheting project since picking up the needles again... a scarf and hat set.

i didn't use a pattern, just crocheted four oddly shaped triangles and then sewed them together. so it ended up a bit too big on the bottom and i had to make some gathers so it wasn't so loose.

all single stitches with polarspun yarn.

yay! :D

Hey everyone! Thought I'd write and introduce myself since I've been reading this community for about a week now...My name is Brooke and I'm currently living in Galveston, TX-next stop, Olympia, WA. I've been making some different things lately, and this seemed like a pretty cool community. Mostly I make stickers, fine art, and purses; but I'm pretty interested in making all sorts of other things. Like the light bulb vase I saw on here the other day...I'm gonna give that a shot. Once I figure out how to post some pictures, I'll show you some of the things I've been working on. Yeah, I think that's all for now...

Things have been kind of busy around here lately, so I haven't had time to work on much. Actually, I haven't had time to finish much. I've got a skirt in my living room that is half done, and another that is cut out and waiting to be sewn together. Anyway...I'm going to cut these pictures, because they're kind of big.

And maybe not crafty, per say, but nifty... )

If anyone else is interested in the 5inch charm swap, please email me by midnight 4/10 (Which is also my birthday btw!) so I can set some guidelines. I wanted to get everything set so we could start in April. So if we can get a list by the tomorrow night at might, I would appriciate it. Late additions can be made for next month.

I love incense and I prefer cones to sticks. It's best to burn them on ashes (so they burn all the way down) and I always knock over the things I use to hold them. Finally, I got smart and washed out one of my small tins (it's from Everest gum, but is the same size as a mini Altoids tin). Now I can safely and cleanly keep the ashes.

Another plus (aside from not getting ashes everywhere) is that my apartment is university owned so we're not supposed to have any candles or incense. With the tin I don't have to worry about it being caught during an inspection. I'm not decorating it until I'm out of here. And when I do decorate it, it will be minimal. Though incense doesn't generate much heat, I don't want to take my chances.

I have a Simplicity SA2200 Creative Spirit sewing machine. It was in my gold box on Amazon one day and I thought, "Hey! I need one of those!" So I bought it.

Of course, now I have lost the manual. I still have the Spanish manual but no hablo espanol.

Does anyone else have this machine who'd be willing to copy or scan their manual for me? I'd reimburse you for your trouble.

If I were to order a replacement one through Simplicity's web site, it would cost almost $15 w/ shipping. I kinda think that's a rip-off.

I went to my great aunt's funeral today.

I took some of her flowers home with me. I would like to make something for my grandmother with them - I'm thinking of surrounding a picture of my aunt with them, but I'm open to suggestions. :)

But what's the best way of preserving them? I wouldn't mind pressing them, but whenever I see pressed flowers they seem to have lost their color and look icky (unless they're roses, and even then, they only look "okay" if they're dark). I tried waxing roses, but apparently I'm not doing it correctly and I don't really want to try it again on these flowers, since they're the only ones I have.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

What's everybody's favourite craft and why? Is it knitting, sewing, crocheting, candle & soap making, beading, glass etching, home canning, etc...???

My favourity by far is the art of easter egg dying. I was born in ukraine and back home it is called "Pysanky". If you're interested in learning more about this old Ukrainian tradition, you should check out this site: http://www.beckyhaycox.com/craftsite/egg.html
It has some great links, as well.

Does anyone know what memory wire is made of? Steel? Aluminum? Copper? Rather than buying it an (expensive) craft stores, I'm wondring if Home Depot has something similar that just isn't called "Memory Wire"... Thanks for any help! :)

Oops!

Forgot about this one.

Made with instructions found at Fabric Origami except I used an 18"x18" square since my mom has an oversized checkbook, then I adjusted the folds to fit it widthwise. It's made from polyester (I think) that I got for a buck. Gotta love buck clearances. :)
