the beat up bear hat.

i wanted to try crocheting something with a rather large needle to see how it would work and this is what i came up with. a really fuzzy, soft and stretchy fit.

again, no pattern.. just made a large rectangle, folded it in half and stitched the edges together. used crystal palace yarns 'splash' in silver.

I was bored, and I had this bulky winter coat I never wear anymore (I'm a big girl, so I just don't do bulky), and some scissors, and a sewing machine so...well...

I made this. )

there are a couple spring projects i want to start, but first i wanted some advice from you lovely crafty ladies. heres what i want to accomplish. thanks to everyone who helps!

+ +i want to make a 'slip cover' type thing for my comforter. its a hidious cheetah pattern which i got in 7th grade and i think its just too, well not me. i want to go for a brown color, but what types of fabrics would work best? something soft preferrably. i'd also like to decorate it somehow [sew big buttons/flowers on the top part]... by the way i've never sewn anything in my life before. its a twin sized comforter as well.

++i have a really cute lamp that i want to put in my bathroom. however i want to put it on the left side of my sink and the 'plug' for the electric cord is on the right side of the sink. you undestand? how can i secure the cord behind the sink against the back side so it doesn't get in the way?

++i have a bunch of papers i need to organize [taxes/paychecks/etc] but i detest metal file cabinents. how can i go about organizing all my cluttered papers? any cute ideas?

++ curtains. ok i want to make curtains for my window... i really want some sheer pink ones.. something light and cute. whats the easiest and cheapest way to do this?

Is there anything crafty I can do with plastic water bottles?

- I drink about three 16 oz bottles a day, and although I recycle them, I'd love to make something out of them.
- I have been fidling with making plastic flowers; cutting out petals and glueing colored tissue paper on the back, then a picture with bold, contrasting colors so you can see the pattern through the paper, although it's distorted, but I haven't had a result to my liking yet.

Anyone have any ideas?

hi all.

just a quick FAQ update.

i'm trying my hardest to break down some of the more vague catagories. especially the random crafty projects catagory.
doing that today spurred the creation of some new FAQ catagories.
they are:

ribbon projects: projects/ideas/scrapsaving
mosaic: ideas + how to's
photography: ideas/takingphotos/designs

also, i broke down a few more catagories that i made subcatagories for:

~ the sewing instructions/tutorials/websites catagory is now strictly for questions and concerns about sewing -----> the new sewing catagory is called: sewing projects: how to's + ideas
~ i made a sculpey catagory and took all those entires out of the clay catagory

* * * * * * * * * * *

and just FYI...

we now have 1,823 [livejournal.com profile] craftgrrl members.

and 897 memories in the FAQ.

happy easter!!

i want to make a simple messanger bag and i know exactly how i'm going to put it together, but i was wondering about making patterns out of newspaper. is it good to use? it shouldn't be too hard if i just make a bunch of rectangles right?

ok so my project of the day was to go through all of my issues of vegetarian times magazine and make index cards out of the recipies for my recipe box.

anyhoo...while going through the mag i found TONS of really neat article and factoids that i ripped out. problem is, i need some way to save them, preferrably something crafty.

i was going to just scrapbook them but a lot of the articles, clippings, and tidbits are on both sides of each page.

any ideas how i can preserve these for later reference/use?

OK, I have just started knitting. Here are my first two projects.

Headband
Slippers modeled by my darling husband :)

Here is my problem: I want to make a knitted throw-type blanket for my cousin's wedding, but I have no money for yarn!

So I am selling some of my fabric/art/soap junk. I *think* it's OK to post it here, I'm not trying to make a profit, I'm just pretty sure no one's going to part with six or more skeins/balls from their yarn stash! So I've gotta buy it. I have had some issues with my PayPal account but I think it's fixed if anyone wants to pay that way.
All of the good stuff is here! )

I loved this Rebecca Minkoff leather cumberbund but didn't want to spend $90 to get it.

So I made my own.

(x-posted to crochet)
using the inner part of wooden (or even plastic) needle point hoops for handbag handles? after searching high and low for a store that carries bamboo or wooden purse handles i purchased 2 6" needle point hoops for 50 cents a piece, sand papered them to make them smooth and now i'm using them to make a crochet handbag.

has anyone had any success with this?

my wallet!

My best guy-friend's birthday is on Thursday and since I have no idea what to buy him I've turned to the thought of making him something. I was thinking of a tie, but my first tie was a dud and I want to give him something really neat because I think he's a super cool guy.

Any ideas what to buy/make him? Please...anything. Even if you go 'tell him happy birthday' or something, I'll be happy.

(p.s. I know there are FAQ's about this but I didn't find anything that I could do since he isn't my boyfriend and he isn't like a certain type, you know, skater or punk or athlete or any of that. I dunno, he's just Kyle.)

hello,
I hope this hasn't been asked before, but how would I go about making the sleeves of a regular shirt ruffled/bunched together like this one?

Does anyone have any ideas for making a sewing organizer? I don't like the sewing boxes I've seen for sale at Walmart and Joanne's Fabric (they're all too expensive for me anyway), but my sewing zone is a disaster area. I know I've heard about roll-up sewing organizers made of cloth (which would be extra cool, since I could carry it to SCA events with me), but I've never seen one. I'm also thinking about making several small organizers for needles, thread, etc., and tossing them all into a wicker basket I have.

Any ideas?
