Hi guys. My fiance is getting into making/shaping his own knives + tools out of steel as well as their "sheaths" (is that the proper term? Ummm...) out of wood. He wants to follow the traditional way that the Celts did it as much as possible.
Does anyone have any experience with making tools/knives/swords out of steel, or shaping wood? Does anyone know of a good source to learn about this stuff?
Any info, no matter how small, is really appreciated. Thanks!

The Dress

Hello, all!

My wedding is over, but as normally happens, I still have The Dress. It's a lovely dress, except for these big bell sleeves. I have the idea to rip the sleeves off (they're rather cumbersome), and wear it as a regular dress (screw posterity!). However, it's blinding white. I do not <3 blinding white dresses. Can anyone give me any tips for dying or otherwise coloring the damn thing? It's georgette and sateen (is that how you spell it? not satin, the faker stuff), with a bodice of a polyester/silk blend (50/50, I think).

Any ideas? At all? I'd rather not have to break out the Crayola markers...

PS- I've looked through the memories and not found anything relevant... please help?

I need to make a table skirt made of raffia. I already bought 2 bags of raffia, now I need to string it together, without having to tape it to the edge of the table. Any ideas?

I looked in the FAQ, but I didin't really see anything relevant.

My cousin is graduating from college, and her party is this Sunday. So my aunt elected me to make her a collage full of pictures and stuff. She gave me a bunch of pictures and one of those trifold carboard boards.

BUT, I'm at a loss for ideas!

I made one for me when I graduated high school, and used glitter, lace etc..but she likes more of a "classy" approach I think. I don't have any items like tickets or anything to put on it for more interest, but I was thinking of putting boarders around all the pictures, but that's still a little boring.

If anyone has any ideas, that would be great :)

I have always had a hard time with silky/slinky fabric - it's hard to cut correctly, and it slides all over the machine. Is there any way to temporarily stabilize silkies so that they are easier to cut and sew? can you starch them, or is there such a thing as a spray stabilizer that washes out? Any suggestions would be great, I got some great fabric the other day and I'm afraid to even start cutting on it...

a question

Hey, I asked someone a question on sewing machines, and they told me I should ask you.

I'm just getting started with making clothes and bags and such, and I need a good reliable sewing machine that wont be too confusing, but is affordable. I'm only 14, so I dont get an income to buy anything expensive. So if you know any good brands, and stores I could get it, I would be soooo thankful!

Also, If you know any tips or good sites to go to for getting started on making items. I want to make those recycled shirts, I think theyre out of tee shirts? Well anyway, if you could help me out, thatd be great. Please email me your answer: kjhshorty@comcast.net

thanks!

So I want to make a boring V-necked top with 3/4 arms a bit more exciting. So I wonder if any of you crafty people have any good ideas? I thought about using a beige elastic lacy looking band in the neckline, and maybe use some buttons. But I don't know! I've got a black fabric marker that I would like to use as well, but I can't seem to compose any good ideas! Help?

i just painted the switchplate cover in our bedroom with zebra stripes. now i'm on a kick.

anyone have any clever ideas for decorating switchplate covers? they're easy to work with, you can just unscrew them and paint or do whatever, but i seem to be drawing a blank. maybe some collages of 50's pinups for the bathroom?

throw some creative stuff at me guys! i'll take pictures when i'm done!
