My sig. other is a huge Napoleon Dynamite fan, and now that I'm done my B. Sc. I have tons of time for artsy stuff, so I'm going to make him an Andy Warhol style Napoleon Dynamite print. I worked out what I want it to look like in Photoshop... I'm very excited about how this will turn out!

I've been meaning to post this for awhile but I always forget! So while I'm thinking about it I should go ahead and ask.

How often should you oil your sewing machine? Mine's still pretty new, I got it at Christmas and I want to keep it running this well for as long as I possibly can. My dad says I should oil it really often, but I thought I read somewhere that newer sewing machines don't need it often at all...also, is there a specific way to tell if it needs oiling or not?

I just adopted about ten (+) black miniskirts of various styles and fabrics. My mom went through her clothing and got rid of a lot of them because it used to be part of her 'uniform' at a restaurant, so she got creative and purchased all sorts of styles. most are a cotton-knit blend or rayon [really lightweight fabric]. i have plenty of basic black skirts so I was wondering if you guys had any favorite ways of decorating/altering clothing. It can be elaborate or simple, i don't care. I would like to either design them and keep them for myself or eventually sell them, so any input is welcome. For one, which is a knit, I plan on 'tie-dying' it with random bleach patterns/spots or taking my bleach pen to it. I have a wide supply of different craft supplies, so I can improvise. I just need inspiration. thank you for ANY input! oh, and I have been browsing the memories for ideas, but fresh ideas are always good too, right?

I also want to alter my coat somehow. Its leopard print (faux fur of course) and I
absolutely love it, but the sleeves are too short and its just.. well, plain
looking.

so I need to add something to it, but I have no idea what.

the said coat )

i was thinking either.. a shaggy faux fur for the new sleeve cuffs.. or i could go 'romantic' and put a really frilly lace cuff around the sleeves. other than that, i have no idea how to jazz it up. or what colors to use for the cuffs.. any ideas? Oh, and I'm not too worried about altering it drastically because i've had it for many years, so its time for a change.

Thanks again ^_^

Okay, so today is the start of my Knitting: Socks and Hats class. Except it should actually be called Knitting: Socks or Hats. We get to choose between learning to use double point needles to make socks, or using circular needles and regular needles to make a hat, or two circular needles to make another hat. So, since I don't know how to use either double point needles, circular needles, or two circular needles, I'm a bit unsure about which I should choose. Which is hardest to figure out on your own?

Thanks!

i'm currently working on an assignment for tafe (thats technical college) on writing a business plan. i'm going to be writing my business plan as if i am starting up an online store, selling purses and bags and one off items of clothing.

i know that a lot of you girls do this and i was wondering if you could help me out a bit with my assignment by telling me about any problems/successes you had while starting out, how you started out, any costs involved etc.

if you have a website could you please post a link for me to have a look at as well. thanks.

I just finished making this little bear for a friend's daughter. The blue fabric is from the discount bin at the fabric store and the stripes and plaids are free swatches I got in the mail last week. The pattern is from a book called Toys for Kids. I made a little tag with my name and a message on it. I hope she likes it!

I finished my monster for A Month of Softies. The theme is Recycled Monster Action. He is made out of fabric from my mother-in-law's scrap bag and leftover fur from a teddy bear I made. Initially the idea was to have him holding his head, but I ended up liking his head on his neck better. My husband suggests making him a Starbucks apron or a crossing guard sash. Any thoughts?

Fiskars

At the local Costco and London Drugs (I'm in Canada) I've seen a set of 20 Fiskar scissors with the funky deocorative blades in a round wooden holder for $20. I'm just not sure if they are decent quality and worth buying.

Has anyone bought this set and do Fiskars come in different levels of quality? Today I noticed individual decorative Fiskars were over $6 each in Michaels and a set of 10? was almost $40, so I'm thinking the set of 20 for $20 must be pretty poor quality.

If the container wasn't sealed up, I'd open it and test them!

Newbie. I didn't know if there a preferred method of introduction so I figured I would just post pictures of what has kept my hands busy lately.

I'm trying to make pirate themed crafts for a swap, and I've sadly run out of ideas after just one thing! Any ideas, any one?

Thanks, yo.

Edit: I'm thinking about a housewares theme. So far I've made a lamp cover (like the one someone posted from ebay a week or so ago), and I'm going to make coasters, but I don't know what else to make.

I fell in love with this beautiful leather messenger bag from Eddie Bauer and bought it online. I wanted to go to the store and see it in person, but the San Jose store is closed for remodeling. So it arrived today, and the strap is far too short to wear it cross-body like I prefer to do. I'm sick of my poorly made cloth messenger bags falling apart, and I'm not really ambitious or talented enough to make my own, so I thought this would be a good solution. The strap adjusts just like a regular belt does, but there's not enough holes or strap to make it as long as I want it to be.

So... here's where the craft part comes in. How can I extend it without tearing apart the strap? I'm thinking of adding some sort of short leather belt piece to each part of the buckle, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about it. So there would essentially be two buckles. That's my best idea, anyway. Any thoughts or suggestions?

If I don't come up with anything, I'm just going to return it, because $200 is a lot for a bag that isn't perfect.

Edit: OK, I think I've been convinced to just return it. I'm digging this bag on Ebay right now... 51" inch strap ought to work :)
