My extremely talented friend Anthony has left it up to me to report that he has made an extremely impressive Johnny Cash jack'o'lantern [my adjectives -ed.]. The picture takes you to his lj and more pictures.

Hello all,
First off I'd like to say hi, because I'm posting here for the first time (been lurking for quite a while though). Second, I have a little question.
I want to make my boyfriend of 3 years a messenger bag for Christmas. He's a cinematographer so he's always carrying around his backpack and his camera bag, and I'd like to condense it for him so that he can fit his camera in with his books. In addition I want to make pockets for his palm pilot, mini-DV tapes, etc. I have quite a bit of sewing experience, but I wanted to get some ideas as far as materials go, and also on how to make the stitching super-strong (since the bag will be heavy). Any tips?

I made these yesterday. And I spent way too much time on them. I've only been doing the brickstitch with seed beads for a little while, but only earrings. I have yet to branch out to other items. Usually the second earring is easier and I'm quick with it. But I had so many troubles with it by the end of the night I was giving it the stinkeye and calling it evil. Miscounting, silk thread getting tangled and knotted, seed beads falling all over the floor, you name it. Finally I did it and they are finished and looking quite lovely. I'm usually a silver girl, but these golden glass babies are so pretty I'm wearing them right now with my pjammies.

Take a lookie here... )

Hello,

I am interested in getting some fairly easy inexpensive ideas for a holiday table center piece. I've looked on various websites, but haven't seen anything too great. They are all very tradional and I'm looking for something a bit more modern. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks !

My daughter loves going to the ren faire and wants to be a peasent girl for halloween and I am nowhere near finishing and it doesn't look like I will have the time between now and halloween to get it finished. Does anyone have any ideas how I can create a no sew peasent costume for her like this one? )

These are so adorable! Print them on regular 8.5 x 11 paper and put a new blade in your Xacto knife.

Go here to download them: http://readymech.fwis.com/

FWIS makes some really cool tshirts too.

Need help installing a Singer zipper foot (works with 'most' sewing machines?) to my Brother xr-65. Any help, anyone?

I have a Singer Merrit that my Grams gave me right before she died. Well now I can't get the dang thing to work right and there's no instruction manual. Aperantly I can buy one for 15 bucks plus shipping but I'd really rather not have to do that.

Pictures and questions... )

I've been looking for a good thin leather belt for a while now. I finally saw one that I loved on ebay, but it was the wrong color (brown) and the wrong size. However, the "horsebit" buckle of the belt was what got me so excited. It looks almost exactly like an eggbutt snaffle bit (yes, that's what it's really called--don't ask). I was an equestrian for years...so this seemed absolutely perfect.

sample horsebit belt )

Getting the buckle isn't a problem--I'm simply going to buy a real bridle bit, and use that as the bucklepiece. (The belt I was looking at didn't close right at the buckle--take a look at the pictures).

How where do I find the leather? And how do I put it together? It looks simple enough...but I've never seen the leather for sale on it's own. I'm not THAT crafty, so I would prefer a leather piece that's finished, or almost finished. If anyone has ideas, let me know. I need the leather to be black, preferably snakeskin/croc embossed (but not a "must"), and 1/2-3/4 inch wide. 24-28 inches when closed (which includes the 6-8 inch buckle...but I can probably adjust on my own).

Any suggestions? Please let me know. This is my first time trying anything like this.

I just got this bag yesterday from Michaels for $25CND with my 50% discount. It is fantastic! It has tonnes of pockets of different sizes, straps for needles, eyelets so you can run your yarn neatly from the skein to your project. It was obviously designed with much help and input from actual knitters. My only three qualms is that it is a bit bulky for carrying everywhere though I think will become more and more of a purse for me; the needle straps aren't big enough for a school ruler; and it only came in this ugly orange colour (though it does match my retro furniture). I've been raving about it to everyone for a couple weeks now and am glad she's now home with me - I call her "Vera".

More photos and notes here.

Edit: No one's gotten my "Vera" reference yet :o(

I am currently working on hand-polishing a pile of petosky stones, as well as some resin pendants. These are both done in the same way ~ where you wet sand them using several grades of sandpaper. (Technically I am using a dremel tool to sand the coarse and fine stages and sandpaper for the super-fine. The Dremel works wonderfully!) I know there are some girls who have done this on here, so I was wondering ~

1. How can you tell when you are done with one grade of sandpaper and should move onto the next? I don't seem to notice much difference between them. Will I not see the scratches until I add the polishing compound?

2. Where do you buy your polish? I would like to get some Serium Oxide (Cerium Oxide) but I don't think the guys at Home Depot had any idea what I was talking about. There was some polish for rock countertops that might work, but next time I will check in the glass section.

3. Resin question ~ I would like to dip some objects into the resin to coat them, but I can not think of how to let them dry. A few things have a loop (like for a pendant) that I can hang them by, but is there a way to coat other things? (Btw ~ after you sand your resin to remove the rough edges, you can dip it back into the resin for a smooth, clear coat instead of polishing it)

It's the first time I post here. I like this community very much!

I've made this angel for an exhibition my mother is setting up. Every artist is making one, but she still didn't have enough material. So I sewed this angel :)

Hello people, I have some questions to ask. :D I looked through the memories section but I didn't really see anything so...yeah.

Okay,
1. What are those materials that CRUMPLER uses for their bags?
2. Where do you get those lined material for clothes? Er, or for handmade journals. That kind that has this wooly feel to it, and is lined.

Thank you! :)

Does any one know of any sites online that have hallowe'en pumpkin carving patterns?

I've looked on google, and checked the memories.

Ok, I have a question... I'm hoping to try a project with knitting with seed beads for the first time, but it asks for YLI Denier Silk Thread, or Nymo Size D thread. In town, all we have is Joann's and Michaels, and I'm not finding these in either. Closest is the Mill Hill Nymo thread, but it doesn't say anything about size! (How badly DOES size matter? ;-) ) Anyone know if that would work? Or maybe, of anything that would be a good substitution? I've been dying to try this technique for a while now!

I know this should proably go somewhere else, but I'm really desperate for ideas. So please.

My eighty five year old great grandmother went into the hospital monday night. Yesterday she was seeing illusions, screaming, telling me the nurses were wearing orange, etc. Today, she was fine, they determined all the illusions to loss of sleep.

She has to check into a rehabilitation center, and she's super bummed. She taught me how to crochet, so I was thinking of doing something with that. Does anyone have any idea what I could make her? please? any help is appreciated.

I'm planning to make fingerless gloves (http://ohmystars.net/craft/index.htm) to match out of this ) (I swear, it really does match well!), but I'd like to have some of what the scarf is around the edges. The issue with this is that the green yarn is MUCH thicker than the others, so I'm not sure how to do it. Should I just do the cuff part in the fuzzy goodness and then start with the wool? Or do the whole thing in wool and add fuzzy goodness later? and if I add it later, how the heck do I do that?? (please excuse the naive knitter. who can only kind of crochet, in case your advice involves crochet. :) )

Thank you thank you!

P.S. to the cat owners )

Hi...I have some pictures, and a question, in that order. :p Pictures...and then a question! )

Here's my question: my house happens to have a rather awesome garden (I'm not bragging; the fact that it's awesome is solely due to the guys who lived here before me) and I want to make statues for it. Erm...how do I go about doing this? Can I do it with Sculpey, and would that be safe outdoors in the rain and the hurricanes and all that? Is there another clay that I can use, maybe an air-dry one, or is that bad? One of those terra-cotta colored clays that I always see in Michael's?
And when I have craft paint that _says_ that it's outdoor and indoor safe on the label...IS IT LYING? Say I made something with Sculpey and painted it with this paint - would THAT stand up to the rain? Or do I have to put a glaze on it or something else? This enough questions for y'all? :P

If anyone could inform me on these things, I would seriously appreciate that...I am DYING to make statues of odd things and put them in the bushes to scare people. ^_^
