hi there,

i'm a new member and i've been enjoying seeing all the creations. i love being inspired by other's art.

anyways, i am currently making a messenger bag out of a material that is very similar to demin. i am trying to put in an exposed zipper pocket and i'm having a heck of a time making it look neat and tidy on the edges of the rectangle i cut to insert the zipper. the area i cut that looks like this:
>--------< the little points at the end fray and are driving me NUTS. i've tried three times tonight and have given up for the night. i was just wondering is there a trick to using this type of material? i've only ever sewn zippers on less thick cotton materials.

any help is appreciated. my bag is due on friday afternoon for my sewing class (eek!).

thanks!

alright crafters,

what are you methods of wrapping presents this year?

I'm torn between wrapping my presents in folded milk cartons of shoving them in SOBE bottles.
Honestly, I don't know which one is worse.

Hi ladies... I have what may be a stupid question, but...

I came across a crafty make-your-own placemat thing I want to do with my kids at school, but it says I need "iron-on vinyl". I have never heard of this before and just wanted to see if you guys knew the best place to look for such a thing or if it had another name.

Sorry if this is a bad question and I promise to post more of the stuff I've been working on soon!

Thanks!

So last night my friend Jenna and I were talking about gift ideas for her boyfriend and such... She wants to take a picture she took a while ago and print it out onto fabric.  Easy, right?

Well.. she wants the picture to be... almost the whole blanket.  Just a black border going around.  I said the only way I could really think of is printing the picture out onto lots of different pages of iron on paper (like with the rasterbator or something) and then cutting them out and piecing them together.  I checked kinkos out and it doesn't seem like they print on fabric....

does anyone know if there is a place that can do this???  Usually I can just open up google and type away and search away.. but I'm either not typing the right things or I am just not seeing it...

I keep telling her it'd be poor quality b/c it's so blown up.. but she really wants to do it.

I think she wants it to be this picture  )

I don't know.. I told her I would ask you girls n guys

my halloween costume, which i was ever so proud of, contained these two pieces and many more accessories that were lost in the hard partying of the holiday. so i present what is left:

i made a tabbed corset from that online generator that everyone uses, and drafted the basque myself with endless variations on trapezoids. the corset is boned with zip ties and some plastic stuff intended to protect interior corners. it has no opening busk, so the excess lacing ribbon is wound around the waist and tied in the front. it is trimmed with black bias tape. the basque closes with a lime green zipper and sits at the proper waist.

new bag. this time, it's not cardboard based, it's plastic. so, therefore... you can get it wet, without worrying about it :)

Have just realised that although I have been on LJ a lot lately, I haven't posted on here for ages! So I thought it was time for an update.

I have become a spinning addict as well as still crocheting all the time. There simply aren't enough hours in the day for these hobbies, but I love it!

Anyway, here are some pictures of what I have been up to recently, ENJOY!

Butterscotch yarn...yummy browns and toasty coloured merino with sequins for texture. It is lovely and snuggly. This is why I love spinning so much:

skirt )

i made it from two bandanas i got at the dollar store. it's the first thing i've made in a while so the workmanship isn't too good, but i'm glad i actually finished it.

For some reason my entry got deleted. Imma re-post it, but edited a little. If there's something wrong with it, please let me know.

I want a new sewing machine for christmas. I want to be able to do lots of different stitches, including a zig-zag/satin stitch. I don't know what stuff is called, so I'll just show you some of the kind of stuff i want to be able to do with it. If you guys could tell me what I need to tell people I'm looking for, that would be great:

-Someone posted this the other day. I want to be able to do the stitching that's on this.
http://www.phunkymonkeythreads.com/other/hosting/walletfront.jpg
-I also want something strong enough to go through thicker fabrics. I don't know if that has to do with needles or what.

A lot of people ask for reccomendations of good machines, but I also want to know what I should avoid. I've heard bad things about newer singers because of the plastic parts. So... what should I avoid, concerning Brands or anything else?

What are some things that your machine does that you didn't realize you wanted before you bought it, but wouldn't buy another machine without it now that you've experienced it?

Do you gys have any links to what different stitches and feet do? with pictures and good desriptions?

I've looked in the memories and found some good information already, so I know what's there. There are just a couple of things I really want the answers to and wanted to post about.

Thanks!
Steph

P.S. I already got curbside_bandit and pmthreads comments :) Thanks, guys.

Okay my crafty comrads...I have a dilema.

I'm planning on making a blanket for my Band Director's Baby for Christmas (I planned it for his birthday...but I was still sewing machineless back then. ~_~). Well...I wasn't quite sure how big to make it...

He just turned 1 in September, but I really don't see him alot and I'm not sure how big he is now. ~_~

Any thoughts on the size of this blanket? I would be quite greatful.

Sorry for no pictures...my camera's batteries are dead at the moment. I do have some new things I'll post soon. ^_^

Thank you muchly!

<3 Candice
