I'm knitting myself the Cleaves shrug from Knitty.com. I've finished the sleeves and it's time to cast on for the ribbing around the shoulders, but the pattern calls for a cable cast on, and the directions aren't making sense to me. Neither are the directions in the SnB books. I'm worried about trying another CO method, since I'm already a really tight knitter and I'm worried that my cast on won't be stretchy enough for the ribbed piece. Does anyone have any suggestions? Maybe better directions or a video or something on the internet? I'm a pretty decent knitter, and have made stuffed animals and things, not just scarves, so I feel like this is probably something that I should be able to understand that will seem so obvious once I see it done, but I'm just not getting it!

Hey All!

I'm making a venture out to michaels possibly tomorrow afternoon to buy supplies for my new project. I'm making a old book into a new journal. I have some questions...

Does michaels sell those special knifes(I forgot the name:() I have to get tons and tons of paper out of this old book and ripping the pages out isn't doing much.

also...where can I find small binder rings?I did a search on the michaels site but to no avail.

And I'm planning on buying some fabric to cover the cover of the book with(although Ill be putting holes through it to attach the binder rings)..What kind of glue should I use to cover the book,I need a strong glue but the type that doesn't wrinkle the fabric.

This is a total -thinking as i'm going- type project I really have no idea. and It will only be my 2nd visit to michaels(ever).

stash-busting swap package (glitter)
i participated in a 'stash-busting swap' over at glitter. details - we all had extra crafting stuff, so we'd craft for someone else with what we had on hand. i sent crocheted goods and yummy teas/candies over to krazigal72, and jackierocket sent me a bunch of knitted goods! i received: a funky decorated lunch box with craft eyes and glitter on it (lol) and inside THAT was black knitted pouch, and inside THAT were two knitted hairpins (cherry & lemon fruits!!!), an iron-on cherry applique, and a cherry beer cozy (which she said is to be used for soda for legal purposes until i turn 21 lol), and a little clear stone that says "count your blessings". also in the lunch box were three mini "pinky pots lip gloss" and a rosewood eye relaxer (mm smells good!), and she also made me a fuzzy knitted neck cozy.

sorry for text only, but does anyone know a way to make astro-turf, or something very similar? I need to turf roughly 5 square feet, but I'm on a ridiculously tight budget, and even the cheapest price of $1.25 per square foot would push us over our limit :-(

ideas??

Hello Crafy Ladies,

I'm new to the community and just wanted to formally introduce myself. I am a social work student at UNBC Northern British. I love to knit and sew, and have recently been getting into doing "altered books". I have posted some pictures of a felted bag that I have made... this was my first knitting project! I was quite please with how it turned out.

...so I jazzed up my BCP case.

Ooh, sparkly )

I'm pretty proud of how it came out, seeing as how I only had a vague idea of how I wanted it to look. :)

So, I posted the other day (yesterday? I can't keep track of days anymore) with the skein of brown yarn that I spun (below), my first attempt ever! Well, I started another skein last night and just finished it today, so I present you with these two skeins of yummy looking yarn:

As you all know i'm making a book. Some questions

1. what kind of needle should I buy to thread my pages together(I'm thinkinf of using either ribbon*difficult i'm sure* or yarn)

2.Which is more durable ribbon or yarn?

3. Punching holes in the spine, using what?

4.Should I fabric the cover and then punch holes?

...sorry if these are REALLY stupid questions.

First crafts and handiwork. <3 I sculpted this doll head from super sculpey and cast it in resin. His name is Bastian. He's on a body made by the korean company, Dollshe. This is my craft. I sell the heads so I can buy other people's awesome jewelry and bags and stuff! <3

Speaking of... I have a question about jewelry, you all are nice, so I'm asking you. Here's the problem: my mother is /extremely/ allergic to metal. At this point she can only wear 24k gold or platinum(haha, mom. yeahright I'm gonna get you platinum jewelry!). Anything else she breaks out. Her ears are especially sensitive, even the trick of covering the earrings in clear fingernail polish doesn't work, she still breaks out. We've tried stuff for "sensitive ears", we've tried stuff that you put ON your ears or skin to protect it, we've tried titanium(works for me, not her), we've tried damn near everything. the only that doesn't break her out is 24k gold. And let's face it, 24k gold is reserved in most stores for extremely fancy, boring, jewelry and my mom doesn't really like it. You can only have so many tiny understated stud earrings before you go crazy. So I'm looking to buy some stuff from crafters, like on etsy. also with dangly earrings, if the whole thing isn't gold, if the danglies are something else and it touches her neck, she'll break out.

The question I have, is does anyone know what they mean by "14k gold filled" what does the "filled" mean? some say stuff like "24k gold filled brass". Is the outside brass then? Is anyone else super sensitive to metals and can tell me what you'd be able to wear? I really want to get some awesome earrings for my mom. She keeps buying crappy ones because they're "cute" and then giving them to me when she can't wear them. *I* can't wear them either! >:/

oookay. so. i had this great idea - i'm going to knit a bikini for myself.

the only problem is, i hate hate hate reading the abbreviations for instructions on knitting, and it's very hard to find a good pattern. i have one here: http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/cce-bikini.html , but it involves crocheting, and i'm not really sure... you get the general idea.

anyway, the point is: does anyone know of a really good pattern? and can anyone decipher what all the abbreviations are for me? i apologize for being such a novice - i really can knit, i'm just not used to working with patterns. thanks in advance, everyone :)
