I stumbled on nine balls of Noro Miho for 50 cents each at a local thrift shop. The person who had bought them dropped $9.45/ball--as evidenced by the price tag--but I can't find out anything online about Miho or why/when it was discontinued.

Does anyone know when it was discontinued?

I'm trying to piece together how this yarn made it to me, as there were also 30 balls of expensive cotton ribbon that had price tags for $10.50 that I also picked up for 50 cents/ball... AND a cone of 75% rayon/25% silk labeled Contessa for 67 cents. I REGULARLY check out this thrift shop for yarn (~once a week) and I have NEVER seen anything but acrylic. Did this person get an amazing sale, stock up, and give up? I'm so curious! :D

Thanks!

...and not just any champagne cork - two champagne corks from the bottles of "real" champagne (ie: from france). My boyfriend earned his PhD this past March, and I earned mine this past August (which is why there are two corks)

I'd like to do something special with them since I can't seem to throw them away (never mind the fact that each of us has a title, dissertation and a diploma to "remember" the event with)

any ideas?

thanks! :)

Hi! I recently joined this community and thought I'd post a few items. I use recycled goods where ever possible....(apparently the term is 'up cycle' but I find it a bit yuppie...)

Purses made from cassettes.... a few shops have been stocking these but none have sold :-(

Badges and purses from recycled fabric

Journals made from street and phone directories and recycled paper...

Embroidered gloves

To be honest I've not had a lot of luck in selling all my products -haven't sold any cassette wallets(my stuff is in a couple of stores), but I'm opening an etsy store soon- with better pictures, these are a bit blurry! I'd appreciate any feedback

cheers

I'm wanting to make a scale armour vest, and found a few websites where I can buy the scales, however I'm wondering how many I need to buy. At $35 per thousand pieces I want to buy as few thousand as possible, but I'm not sure how to figure out the amount I would need. Also, what do you all think would be the best way to attach them? A heavy thread hand-stitched to a canvas backing?

EDIT: I just ordered 5k scales and rings. I'm scared.

For those of you who commented on my previous post, thanks! We decided to go with acrylics, since we wanted the window to last all year. So, after a trip to Hobby Lobby to buy paint and brushes, we got to work yesterday.

And, since I uploaded pictures for my LJ friends and my Facebook, I figured I'd share them here as well.

Behold, fishiness! [+12] )

I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out, especially considering that [a] I hate paints, and [b] the rest of us aren't artistic in the least. There are still a few things I'm probably going to fix later just 'cause they drive me nuts [like the orange fish which is missing a fin], but on the whole I like it. It also makes us the coolest suite on campus, bahaha.

I've finally cleared enough space to set up a little "metal workshop." I'd love to start making some jewelry pieces (I took a class *MANY* years ago that sparked the interest!). So for those who make things like pendants, necklaces, even bracelets and rings...

1) What basic soldering supplies do I need in order to have a nice range of project options?

2) Where can I purchase these things at a decent price?

You folks are always so helpful. Thanks in advance!

OMG! I just purchased a rotary cutter at joann's this afternoon, thinking it might help a bit with my sewing projects, but I had NO idea how well these things work. I am in love! I always have problems cutting straight and not having jaggedy like edges. Has anyone else been pleasantly surprised by a craft tool like this before?
Just thought I'd share my craft-happiness. :D

Two girls (aged 9 & 10) spent the weekend with us so I had lots of crafts lined up to keep them occupied. :)

We started off with some Halloween decoupage. They had never done it before and really got into it, I love that! :)

We used orange tissue paper, ripped and overlapped when glued. And black construction paper for the images. I think they turned out great!

Question!

Okay, so I'm in the process of making two sets of pearl jewelry for my little sister and my niece. My little sister is getting hers for her birthday in February (she'll be turning four), and I haven't decided when to give my niece's jewelry to her (she's four weeks old).

I bought some pink pearls and 14K gold o-shaped clasps. Now I'm trying to figure out what to put it together with.

I intend to make two bracelets, two necklaces, and two sets of earrings. The woman at the craft store near my house suggested thick jewelry elastic, but I'm not sure I want to use such cheap materials. The other option I came up with is sterling silver. In that case, I'm not sure whether I would want to crimp it (I always have trouble with this and there ends up being too much extra space at the end) or solder it (I haven't done this with jewelry before, but it seems like it would be better. I'd just need to get the materials).

What does everyone here recommend for a project like this? The quality of the final product is extremely important to me.

Also, I'm going to buy some gold posts for the earrings-- what's the best way to set a pearl on an earring post?

Thanks for any advice!

Edit: I was thinking about it, and posts may not be the best way to go for the earrings because my pearls are fully drilled-- unless someone has an idea on how to conceal the holes! Maybe someone else can think more creatively than myself on what kind of earrings to use and how to make them. :)

I'm in the market for a grommet machine. I bought a hand one from Walmart, but I can't seem to get them tight enough - they wind up falling off after a few washes.

Do any of you girls have suggestions for a better one, or am I doing it totally wrong?

I just made this little guy on some satin-y teal fabric. But...what should I do with him?

Does anyone know where I can pick up some supplies for my riso print gocco online? (ie: screens, ink, bulbs, etc.) I haven't used it in two years, and all of my old favorite suppliers don't seem to pan out anymore.
