Jan. 28th, 2009 11:42 amSooo my mom really wants to get into a craft, and I would REALLY like to encourage her in that, especially something she can sit and do, because she is a horrible workaholic and on her feet 18 hours a day. (I wish I were exaggerating. She makes me tired just being in the same room with me.)
I was hoping she would take to something like beading. She likes pretty, shiny things.
My question is, do any of you know of a good beginner's book or magazine for ... let's just say the completely clueless? Something that could go over basic terms like what a focal bead is, best way to attach clasps, types of clasps, types of wires, stuff like that. Possibly something that touches on color theory/complementary colors. I went to my local Hooby Looby and most of what they had seemed pretty advanced, which would probably frustrate dear ol' mum into giving up before she started. She's looked around in her area and there's not much in the way of classes for this, so a book would be most helpful.
So this is not text-only, have some recent dumpings.

( Armadillo, rusty robot, and a jar of gears )

i cannot figure out how to photo through glass, so this is before it's all sealed up. it's 8x11ish and way superfun.
i love it.

hemming help needed
Jan. 28th, 2009 05:12 pmBought ikea curtains (specifically, these) to accent the doorway to the bathroom. However, they have been nothing but hell to try to hang.
I used an iron-on webbing no-sew hem thingy to hem the first curtain. Unfortunately, it failed miserably: the hem was crooked, curving down at the bottom (and it was obvious). Ripped it off and not all of the webbing came off in one fell swoop. The curtain is undamaged (i.e. not ripped), but some of the webbing is still stuck to it. Tips on how to get it off would be greatly appreciated.
Another thing that would be appreciated is information on how to hem straight. The fabric is a slippery gauzy polyester. At this point, I'm tempted to just take pinking shears to it and hope I can cut in a straight line at last. Thoughts? I have a tabletop ironing board to work with, if that matters.
Last question: any other methods of hemming besides sewing, iron-on strips, or cutting?
