I have 2 beautiful swatches of cloth, one is while with a black vine patter and the other is blue with stars. Unfortunately they are both only 1 ft by 2 ft pieces and I have no idea what to do with them. I am ok with using them together or apart. I haven't been sewing very long so I am looking for something rather simple. Any suggestions?

OK Grrrls,

A friend of mine is due to give birth any day (hour, minute, second...) and wants to make sure that she has the best baby carrier available. She doesn't have a lot of money, and with a new baby I think that things will get even tighter for her. Has anyone out there made a baby carrier/sling and had good luck with it? If so, what patterns/tutorials did you use? I have found a few things through sites like: http://www.slingrings.com/patterns.php

I just want to know what has worked, and what else is out there. I have experience with some slings (ei: ergo, mei tai, bjorn, hotsling) through my work as a nanny, but have never been asked to give advice before. I just want a few more opinions to add to my own, and I almost think that for some things she may end up spending more money to make the carrier than she would spend to buy one already made...

But I did want to share some pics of my new sewing machine! It's a treadle sewing machine! A friend of my dad's at work was looking to get rid of it because he didn't have room for it. Apparently, this guy had saved a whole bunch of them from going to the junkyard years back, and had over the years weeded them down to this last one, but needed room in his house for something else so when my dad mentioned I'd just taken up sewing he asked if I'd like it!

Now I didn't have enough room at my house (hubby and I are hoping to move into a bigger house sometime in the nearish future), but my mom offered to make a little space for it!

Well, considering how this guy came by them we weren't sure what kind of shape it would be in, so imagine my surprise when I walked into the room and saw this:

You can totally feel the suspense, can't you? )
