First post here!!

Bracelet for my bf made on my beadloom with a few 'special' beads added to the ends. I chose a DNA inspired pattern because bf studies and loves evolutionary biololgy.

I want to know if anyone out there in LJ Land has ever (successfully) painted a fake Christmas tree? And if so, how? I'm looking for a tutorial, or a solid how-to, or paint recommendations, or... pretty much any info/advice from someone who has actually done it. I'd just hate to spend $$ (at a thrift store or garage sale, since I'm hella-cheap) only to melt the plastic because I used the wrong kind of spray paint, or have all the needles clump together because I used the wrong technique for spray-painting, or something else stupid (I'm prone to doing stupid things, unfortunately).

I Googled and searched the memories (and used LJSeek), but I was hoping for something more specific than "Just spray paint it!"

I'm also hoping that if I start painting now, the paint smell will air out in time for the holidays XD

Thanks in advance!

while browsing freecycle the other day i saw someone offering an older sewing machine.  only problem with it was the pedal sticks & so it won't always stop sewing when you want it to.
i am a complete sewing novice (unless making one drawstring bag in home ec in the 8th grade counts) & i have NO idea how to use a sewing machine.  HOWEVER i have recently acquired my great grandmother's sewing table complete with machine (no pics sorry - it's not set up yet)  as that one has a lot of sentimental value for me i don't want to screw something up & break it.....besides i'm sure it needs serviced as it hasn't been used it at least 20years.
so i figured that the best solution was to practice on another machine...
oooooo sewing machine! )

it did not come with a manual & i can't seem to find one online that's free.  the woman i got it from said she had found one but lost the zip drive it was on.
can anyone help me find a manual?
any tips for a complete sewing virgin?

thanks!!

Flotsam cat. Made entirely out of fabric and old clothes washed up at the riverside as part of an art project.
It has a twin, but it's not quite finished yet.

I am interested in making a clear/semi-translucent ball, along the lines of this but handmade. I will be filling it with plush items, which is why I need to make one rather than buying one. I'm thinking of buying the ball I linked to and using it as a base/form to create mine... would wrapping it with a layer of clingwrap and then covering that with clear glue be strong enough? The only other method I can think of is papier mache, but that isn't transparent.

Any suggestions or requests for clarification are welcome. Thanks in advance.
