I have been bored lately and I don't have to baby-sit today so I thought I would try my hand at making CP soap for the first time since I have been buying supplies and such since December.
I have a recipe for an easy first timer soap from the book Essentially Soap.
The recipe seems to be EXTREMELY large and I have no Idea how to scale it down.
I only want to make a 2 or 3 lbs of soap today.
Here is the recipe, if anyone could help me convert it (I really don't want to nor can I afford to mess it up) I would appreciate it muchly:
Vegetable Shortening 6lbs.
Coconut Oil 14 fl. oz.
Olive Oil 3/4 of a cup
Lye 12 oz.
Your choice EO 2 TBS.
I don't want to take a chance messing this up and I am horrid at math, so could maybe someone help me or show me how to do it?

I have been trying to figure out how to put a link in here without it being 40 miles long... someone told me how to do it before, I wrote it down, and it grew legs and left my house, I'm sure of it....

(edit) Problem solved, thanks to Miss Kissy!

I noticed a few weeks ago that someone posted in Craftgrrrl about "rice for peace," in which you send little baggies of rice to Tony Blair or George Bush and ask for it to be sent to the starving people of Iraq. I have a few comments on this method of activism:
First, these bags of rice are thrown out once (or even) before they reach the office of the respective political leaders. This is a WASTE of perfectly good rice, so you're only ameliorating the problem of starving people. A better option is to donate food or money to UNICEF, which is a UN-sponsored organisation, which means that the food will actually where it's needed, since many countries are doing MUCH WORSE than Iraq.
Just some food for thought for everyone.

I am have started the process of making a late Tudor period corset. I thought I would go ahead and share my progress here. Last night, a wonderful lady helped me make a pattern for it. It is made out of muslin. (I know, I know it kind of looks like underwear, but just image the sides wrapped around to the back.)

Five measurements were taken. Chest, waist, front, back, and side. The back and side was measured from the chest to waits, and the front was to where I wanted the bottom to be. A busk is a piece of wood that goes in the front to keep the whole thing flat. I'm not sure how I am going to make that, I may just have to order it online. For boning my husband is going to make me steel wires that will go every 3 inches or so on either side of the busk.

I will be making two corsets, one for formal occasions, and one for everyday wear. For the formal one, I got some beautiful forest green material with a gold swirl pattern in it. I'll upload a picture of it later. I hope you enjoy watching this process. I certainly am having fun making it!

Okay, this might be a stupid and/or obvious question, but I couldn't find anything like it in the FAQ. I'm making a mix CD for my mom, and I really want to decorate the front of the CD (I don't have a label-making program). Can I paint or decoupage it without the paint or the glue ruining the music side of the CD?

Has anyone made their own fencing knickers? I am about to cut mine out and I was looking for any pointers. Mine will be made of heavy canvas (thicker than denim), doubled in the front of the legs, with ten extra inches of fabric attached to the waist so that they come up to the bottom of my ribs. I plan to make them close under my knees with velcro tabs, and I'm pretty sure I will be able to lunge in them. Does anyone have any websites to direct me to, or any books? Alumni of my team have apparently done this with success. I am not by any means competing on any high level, where FIE might complain. Right now, anything will be better than the too-large one size fits all knickers I have been using. And best of all, I preshrunk my fabric with fiery heat so that I don't have to air dry them ;-)

Also, any directions for a home made plastron would be nice. I could prolly figure it out, but I'm a bit lazy right now.

Hey, ladies...

I have to make a rockin' baby shower gift in about four weeks. I quilt, I knit, and I'm overconfident that I can learn to do just about anything else.

Does anyone have any really, really fun, funk-abulous patterns for baby stuff, or links to neat baby gift ideas, or just plain old ideas?

Come on, give it to me!

les x et les o,
Sara
