I start back at school tomorrow (well, today), only this time, I've upgraded from community college to university. I'm so excited I'm about to explode, but instead of doing that, I got crafty and sewed together a gift for myself... a pencil holder! :D Took me about 15 minutes to sew together, including the time I had to re-sew the ribbon because I initally put it on the wrong side (it would have been inside the bag, literally.). I might make some for my other two friends joining me from comm. college!

"green glass clouds" hat

made freestyle with red heart light & lofty yarn and a q hook. just started randomly going in circles and ended up with this. it was completely different than what i had planned, but sometimes happy accidents are the best.

the wire & beads were added by stringing some beads on 28 gauge wire and then single crocheting the wire with a size i hook, dragging the beads to the top loop when i needed them. then i stitched the wire down in place on the hat.

made a quick poof ball and stitched that down.

all done!

I hate to just post in here and ask for suggestions, but I'm stumped. I'm getting ready to leave for college in Vermont in about a week. My wonderful boyfriend (that's him in my icon) was supposed to come up with me (I'm going to be approx. 10 hours away from him) for the first few days to help me get settled in, but about two weeks ago he was committed to a mental ward for an acute manic episode (turns out he's bipolar). Now he won't be going with me and I want to think of some sort of thing I can make for him to remind him of us while he's in there (could be anywhere from a couple more weeks to over a month). We had already planned to mail a scrapbook between the two of us during the school year and every Valentine's Day I write up 12 memories of the past year for him, so I've got those ideas covered. I'm stumped. I know you crafty people are always coming up with unique ideas, so I thought you might have some suggestions for me. Thanks for your time!

Good morning, lovelies! I need your help!
My boyfriend's birthday is on Thursday, and i have been placed in charge of the festivities. Since he likes old science fiction stories (heinlein, asimov, etc), we decided upon a science fiction theme. So far i am pretty hard-pressed for ideas, though i am definitely going to make a robot cake. The party is going to be at my house, we are going to decorate the living room according to the theme. I was thinking about drawing, on carboard, a bunch of rocketships and spacemen and martians and such and putting them on the wall. Also, i work at a Hobby Lobby, and they sell astronaut ice cream, so we were thinking about serving that, too.
So, other than that, do you have any suggestions? And does anyone know where i could ifnd some retro-ish images of martians, etc to copy for decorations? Any help would be much appreciated.

Here's an ensemble I made recently with two old pillowcases. I didn't use a pattern I just had this idea in my head for a top for a while and used old pillowcases because I didn't want to waste good fabric on a potential failure. It's got a built-in bra and is comfy as hell!

I haven't been sewing lately. It's killing me! I have plans this week, though.

i'm planning a mad tea party. i want to take old teapots from thrift stores and paint them wild colors/designs. any suggestions for what type of paint to use? i'm a little worried that waterbased paints will run if any tea is spilled. i don't need my guests drinking tempura or acryllic!

what about waterbased paint first, then use a clear coat of glaze? spray paint? or do you think oil based would be better? i don't want to spend a lot of money and the paint job only has to last one night.

thanks in advance!!

I was shopping around for a new purse last week and couldn't find anything i liked that i could afford so i decided to take matters into my own hands.

Red canvas bag purchased at Michaels for around $5.00.
Removed cheezy canvas straps and replaced them with fun zebra fabric trim purchased for around $3.00. Then stenciled Audrey with black acrylic paint.(stencil from stencilrevolutiuon.com)

Awww-yeeah......new purse for around $10!

Question... I've got A LOT of press photos from bands just sitting in a folder. What could I do with them? I don't want to just have them sit in my drawer forever and I don't really just want to hang them up normally. I want to do something creative, but I'm drawing a blank. Any ideas?

(x-posted. sorry ;x)

Not sure how crafty this is but I thought I would show you anyways, I bought this cabinet from Ikea and decided I would paint it purple and put little purple puzzle pieces around the glass part. It turned out really cute.

So I was at a local CD shop this past weekend and saw the coolest thing hanging on the ceiling- a CD disco ball!

They took what was probably a styrofoam ball (but any sphere would work), and glued a bunch of broken CD pieces to it (writing side-in). This made for a spiffy CD disco ball! Has anybody ever tried this or seen it done? It seems like a neat way to use old CD's (or AOL cd's...). I would think that a hot glue gun would work for attaching the CD's to the ball.

i'm more of a lurker, not a poster... but heres the story behind this:

my friend julie (who desperately wants to be in this community but has no lj code, so if there is one out there, i'd appreciate) had all her c.d.'s stolen. and, i just happened to have bought one of her favourites the other day, so i burned it (i know, i'm sorry, but it was tragic) and instead of a plastic case i pulled out some felt and embroirdery thread, and with no plan of what i was doing made this: it worked out well, i thought. i left it as 'best tip ever' in the restaurant where she works :)

and then today we made some wallets out of bright coloured felt with lyrics written on them. they turned out super cute. i'll maybe post pics later.
