i want to ask a silly question....the faq didn't have any felting posts...

what is "felting" when it involves things like using things other than the regular old felt that i think of......? like...sweaters?

thanks.

i've bought some soap and want to melt it down to make different shapes, rather than boring bars...

what i want to know is: is it ok to melt soap in the microwave?...

...and if not, what's the best [and preferably easiest] way to do it?

Has anyone seen that comercial of that girl putting the record in a glass bowl and then putting it in the microwave? Is that REALLY how you do it? I would imagine its a bit harder than that.

Hi everybody,

I have been reading for a bit and I love this community : )

Here is my question:

I want to learn to make granny squares so I can make some scarves as Christmas presents. I have searched the archive here and haven't seen anything. What I need is a guide for dummies. I can crochet, but I can't follow a pattern in gibberish. I am looking for a site with pictures maybe. Anyone know of one?

Thank you : )

hip hip hooray today is finally here!
I am hosting my marble magnet making day today. I've had the supplies now for three days or so and i havent been able to make 'em because once i start its hard to stop!
I'm hosting it through LA People Connection. For those of you who don't know check it out ESPECIALLY if you live in or around Los Angeles! We do all kinds of crafty-ness in addition to get out of the house and meet people and do cool things-ness! I am one of the event co-ordinators and it's so much fun! oh yeah and it's totally free!
I got my supplies from Tap Plastics and i got awesome magnets from Amazing Magnets. I highly suggest ordering from them. I got my supplies in two days ( i do live in the area though) plus they sent me not only what i ordered but a sample pack of magnets AND a magnetic pen! Yahoo i love free goodies. And they are the super strong rare earth magnets so they are high quality.

Yesterday all you felters helped me out at work.
How you ask?
Well I work at Michaels, I'm the front end supervisor but at this particular moment I was putting away things in the seasonal department. I customer asked my manager if she had anyone who knew about yarn. She said she'd call someone, but since I know our yarn department like the back of my hand (obsessed much) I popped my head up and said "What do you need?"
"I need Patons Merino for that thing where you make something than shrink it" she said
"Felting?" I asked.
"You know what it is?" she asked.
"Yes where you knit something and then put it in the washing machine or in really hot water until it shrinks and felts." I said
"It's called felting?" she asked.
"Yes" I said
I told her I didn't think we carried Patons Merino but I double checked to be sure (we don't).
So I guess I really didn't help her find what she wanted but thanks to all you lovely ladies and gents I knew what it was she wanted to do right away so at least she didn't waste her time.

I just bought a bunch of yarn on sale at michaels, and a learn to knit and learn to crochet book. I figure it'll help me pass the time on the drive to Oregon for thanksgiving and once I'm at the cabin (where I'm going with my boyfriend's family). I was thinking of making a scarf or an afghan for a first project -- which one do you recommend as a beginning project?

Ok, so awhile ago I asked if anyone had any ideas for tshirts for a Brad Paisley concert I was going to with my friends. Well, I just wanted to show you all what we finally came up with. So, here ya go

It took 2 of us between 5 and six hours to make 10 shirts. I never expected to spend that much time, but we had a blast doing it.

i've been really intrigued by those rice bags everyone has been talking about so i decided to try to make one. i had this smallish pouch thing that i sewed a while ago that didn't come out right. its about 5" by 7" and just filled it with rice and sewed the last edge up. i don't have any kind of herbs or anything like that so i just made the pouch filled with rice and heated it up. it came out cute for being a spur of the moment thing and i'm excited to make cute ones in different sizes for xmas presents.
how big do you normally make them?
last night i also made a ton of marble and non marble magnets and also decoupaged an altoid tin.

X-posted in my own journal and Craftgrrl:

I have been stage-managing a local production of Harvey and the director is extremely artistic, so I decided to make a collage shrine box for him as a thank you for letting me work with him. He had just made a collage of photos of the cast and crew interspersed with pictures of various types of rabbits(there is a white, invisible rabbit in the play)and it came out fabulously.

This inspired me to make something for him. It, too came out really well. I took a small, wig box and decoupaged the inside of it with definitions of pookas and various papers, added letter blocks spelling out Harvey, added various rabbit toys and a rabbit candle holder complete with candles, hot glued all that together(had cut part of the box apart and set the base of the box on the lid which then became the shrine base) along with gold rick rack, strings of sequins, glass blobbies and a collaged cut-out of a rabbit to go into the recessed area. The collaged rabbit had photos of the actor playing the lead role of Elwood P. Dowd in our production, small, magazine pictures of women in period dress(1950's),a magazine photo of Jimmy Stewart as Dowd in the film Harvey, and various other phrases from the play. It was so much fun.

Okay, I am not really doing it justice. I have no scanner or digital camera, but somehow I have to remember to take photos of it, and then somehow post them on here later.

For more about pookas and Harvey check out http://www.geocities.com/harveytpooka/harvey2.htm

has anyone attempted to knit a scarf like that?
i was trying to think of ways to do it and i came up with knitting a chain in each color and then sewing them all together. but.. i think the scarf would end up too bulky and blah. maybe i could try weaving the colors into each other instead of knitting. anyone have any suggestions?

so.

anyone have any links to websites with lots of Egyptian images? I am painting a little shrine and have exhausted the books I have. Thanks!

I was so bored so I broke out my craft supplies and made these earrings.

You like em?

another christmas-gift scarf. i was suprised at how quickly this one knitteed up. especially since it was my first time trying the seed stitch. i used homespun in adironak and size 11 needles. the varigation turned out so beautifully shaded and fading-like. much prettier knitted up than it was on the skein!

forgive my not-yet-woven-in-ends. since this took less than two days total...i think i know what everyone i know is getting for christmas.
