i've never sewn by hand before, but as i want to make a crochet-project-carrier-arounder and my sewing machine is all not at college, i'm going to have to do it.

however, i have no idea how to produce any sort of stitch that will hold. my best guess is to go in and out of the fabric so the thread would should up something like this: - - - - . but i can't imagine that would hold very well, so if anyone could explain different stitches to me and how to do them, i'd love them forever.

I knit a really cute hat for my baby and then learned to crochet and made him a matching scarf.

My crochet job was... okay. I picked up and dropped a few stitches in the first half, but had it figured out by the second half. I made it way too big and too long, but it's cute anyway. I'll probably make him another one and give this one to his older brother.

I love this hat. It's got great shaping, especially for boys. I'm going to use the pattern a lot, sometimes without the checks. The pattern is here.

A couple other pictures )

As a side note, I have to say— it's his first birthday today.

I need some quick help and I thought one of you could tell me....

I'm making cookies and this recipe calls for unsalted softened butter and I don't have any. The closest things I have is Crisco (baking) shortning. Would that work or do I need to make another run to Cub?

Thanks. I'll post my creations later.

My gf and I are going to be helping out a rescue organization at an animal rescue fair at the end of April. One thing we want to do to make money for the organization is to make a bunch of homemade dog treats and sell them. I thought that chinese food take out boxes would be a nice touch to send people on their way with the goodies.

I have a pattern already from something else I did a long time ago (I made some out of album covers from all the bowls I made).

What I'm wondering is, what kind of material can I use to make them out of since it's going to hold food? I have no clue about that. Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone know anything about this?

It was a technique that's been practiced in Asia and other regions of the world for thousands of years. It involves layering lacquer- usually in varying colors- to a desired thickness. The resulting material is carved much like wood or stone and the layers show through.

Several examples.

Some of it is just carved wood with the lacquer applied, but that's not what I'm talking about.

Has anyone ever done this?

What's your all-time favorite craft activity (and why, if you feel like it)?

Today I realized crochet is my favorite. Why? Because it's portable, I can do it while watching a movie or hanging out with people, yarn is gorgeous and non-toxic, and I can very easily undo anything I don't like.

So I thought I'd put this question to the community to maybe give someone else's favorite craft a try in case I haven't tried it yet.

Mods: If this topic has been beaten into the ground, please feel free to delete this entry with no hard feelings from me.

I'm in love...and this was just the test t-shirt. Some people are anti-patterns but I'm not out to be original and creative - I just need clothes because I'm poor! It's a Very Easy Vogue pattern too and went together in about 3 hours. I got the fabric for $3 from an op shop (thrift store).

Sweet sweet love )

Hi, I'm new. :) So I'll post some things I've made in my free time Click on )

I recently made a friend this necklace as a gift (so don't look, Holly, because I'll talk about the cost of making it).

Here it is... )

It is part of a whole set of maille (aka chain mail) accessories which I designed for her on a shooting star theme. I don't have a picture of lovely her in the necklace yet, so for now I shall just throw in photos of myself wearing the necklace, from the front and the back, as well as a silly picture of the choker being worn as a belt by the piggy I also sent her (simply because it was so cute).

ok i guess this may sound kind of weird/obvious. but i always see you gals in here with things you knit or crochet in mutiple colors. likes checks or stripes. i knit and i can not for the life of me figute out how to do this besides just cutting the yarn and tieing the other color to it, it doesnt look like any of you do this becuase i've done it before. i've looked but i guess the most obvious things are right under my nose. suggestions or what you do?
thanks!

New necklace!

I bought some Bali-like sterling beads out of town today and just couldn't wait to play with them. This necklace has freshwater pearls, garnet, and black crystal rondelles.

My pattern said to "stay stich" and I had no clue what that means. Instead of asking here and bothering you fine people, I searched for a while online, and finally found a sewing terms dictionary.

It's comprehensive, and certainly helpful.

I thought I'd share.

this may sound like a weird question, but does anyone know if tights/pantyhose material frays when you cut it? I bought some awesome teal tights today, but I want to make them footless. Would it just start fraying if I cut the bottoms off? And if so, is there anything I can do to make it so that it'll prevent from fraying?

And sorta off topic, but someone made a post a little while ago with pictures of three or so book purses. I tried going back and finding that post, and attempt one of my own, but I can't seem to find the post anywhere. If someone knows where it is, or if you are the one that posted it, could you send me a link to it?

Thanks to all of you in advance. :)

thanks to everyone who had ideas about my friend’s gift (I posted about it here, here, and here.)

i finished the first part of her gift, and made myself one too! we’re still planning on decorating a pair of underwear to match the bustier, but we really wanted to get part of it done before she left for her surgery.

I’m so excited about these! )

i was so inspired by everyone’s ideas, and now i have a ton of new projects i can’t wait to start. thanks again!
