Hello! How would one go about attaching the three layers of a quilt together without binding? Would it be really bad if I sewed up three sides, inserted the batting then closed the last side?

Q #1. Okay, so I was looking at sewing patterns last night at JoAnns (which, btw, they have simplicity ones on sale 5 for $5, at least here they do) and was reading the back and got all sorts of confused.

I wear a size 4-6, depending on how it is made, but the measurements on the back for the size 6 seemed too small, and none of the measurements added up. Like the waist for a 6 said 23, but I'd have to be anorexic to even fit that and I'm really thin. And if went with the measurement for my waist, then my it looked as though I'm wearing a size 8, but the chest and the other measurement seemed too big.

Am I reading this wrong? What do the weird measurements for sizes mean? I don't have the pattern yet (today is payday, therefore me going out and spending lots of money on patterns!) to see the instructions, but I'm afraid to get something and then it not work.

And Q #2 - I'm making a baby quilt for my sister, who is due in September. I don't know if this quilt will end up more of a decorative thing, or if she'll actually use it, but the way I'm planning on making it is just some jungle/animal blocks and orange blocks on the front, and some light yellow flannel in the back.

Now, here's my actual question. Should I just sew it like that, or should I put the batting in it? This is the first quilt I've made, and I'm afraid that if I put batting in it and she uses it then the baby will get too hot - and at the same time, she'll be having the kid in August/September, which means Winter is on the way, so maybe I should because of that?

Hello all -- when looking for communities devoted to Chciago area stitchers and/or stitch n bitches I just couldn't find any. Maybe they are hiding out. Under names I just didn't think of?

Does anyone here know of or belong to such a community?

I have created a community called [livejournal.com profile] chicago_stitch for Chicago area knitters, crocheters, needlepointers, cross stitchers, etc etc etc. The end point being to hopefully get info about Chicago snb's and/or set some up. I can stitch at my LNS but it's mostly older grandmothers doing patterns that don't interest me, and it's usually JUST needlepoint or JUST cross stitch...not a variety.

Anyways...if anyone here is from the Chicago area, please consider joining (there's nothing up there now, I JUST created it). If you're not from Chicago you're welcome too, but like I said the topics will be of interest to locals.

If anyone on here is a member of knitting or crochet or needlepoint or heck ANY needle arts communities on LJ and the mod there permits it, I'd love it if you'd please cross post. It seems rude to join a knitting community when I don't knit, for example, just to promote another community. I am waiting for the stitch community mods to get back to me now so I can ask permission to post. But I just really, really want to meet other Chicago area needle crafters.

Two questions:

1. When you nuke a CD it looks really cool, but whenever I try to cut or break it into shapes, the silver comes off. How do you keep that from happening?

2. Do you know any good online supply shops for interesting fibers for weaving/ fiber art/etc?

Of course......
You make a quick run for a last minute costume idea....
You stay up all night working on it.....
And at 5:30AM the sewing machine stops working.......
For all the lovelys who can read this, and have experience with a sewing machine....what does this sound like could be the problem?

My machine is a White (brand name, bought from Handcock's Fabrics 2 years ago)

For the last three months....it's been sticking if I try to start it from the full up position......and the last month it's also been sticking if I try to start it from the full down position.....
Last night it started slowing down while I was giving it tons of power...then locked up completely. =( I can't get the needle to move at all.....

I'm thinking the motor is locked up..... =( any ideas how I could fix this myself?

Have you ever tried a glue called "Yes!"

This stuff is the bomb! A friend of mine who owns an art store sends me a freebie once in a while to "road test" before he stocks it, and he sent me a huge tub of the stuff 2 years ago. I never really used it because it's just not practical in classes of 25-40 middle schoolers (you gotta spread it with a stick) but I just decided to try it for my own personal use (altered book/ scrapbooks) This stuff is the bomb! It's been sitting on a shelf for 2 years, and it's still pliable. It doesn't wrinkle your paper, and you can use it to bond just about anything. The only thing I couldn't get it to work on was plastic paper-rope... you know the stuff you unroll and use like cornhusks? But it did stick just about everything else, and it makes beautiful book-bindings. They seem to be pretty sturdy, too.

Anyway, if you can find it, try it. I am going to call this guy and tell him how much I love this glue. I feel bad for not giving it more of a chance the first time.

Does anyone know of any stores that carry mylar tape? Like big chain stores? I've been looking everywhere, and I haven't found it anywhere... except this one small store, but they were all out :(

i looked in the FAQ, but nothing really satisfied me from there.

i'm in a predicament. i have a pair of these shoes in that color. the problem is, they got real dirty. i tried to wash them in the washing machine, with bleach, to no avail. they still look a dirty grey brownish blue.

i'd still like to wear them, but i either want to lighten them somehow, or darken them, which would probably be easier. any ideas how to clean them up or lighten them? for darken, i would think to take a sharpie and just go over them, but i think they color would be uneven then. shoepolish maybe?

any ideas would be great.

PS. does anyone have any quick remedies for blisters? i have one on my hand i'd like to get rid of.
