I checked the FAQ's and there are no good brands/suggestions for iron-on transfer paper. I just came back from a trip to Costco, and I found the best iron-on transfers ever! I've already done a t-shirt and a pillowcase with them. Anyway, the brand's Avery and it's just a red box with big yellow letters that says T-shirt Transfers. It's $13.49 for a box of 20 at Costco. It works with an inkjet printer, and the size is 8.5" x 11". If there's no Costco near you, you can get them here: http://www.avery.com/us/Main?action=product.Details&catalogcode=WEB01&node=10211041&productcode=3271

It's more expensive, though.

It has been absolutely forever since I have posted in here...because it has been forever since I crafted (stupid college with its stupid organic chemistry) but I am done this year which means craft time!

I turned this altoids tin into a little fairy box for a co-worker to store wallet-sized pictures of her family in (I hope they fit.)

I apologize for the blurryness of some of the pictures. The lighting in my room is bad.

any suggestions for improvements are welcomed...I want to make sure it looks as good as it possibly can before I give it to her.

sorry!

Hi Ladies and Gents. I'm coming out with a new website and am hoping that I can write walkthroughs for crafts, and have others contribute their ideas and articles as well. If you're interested in having your article hosted on my website I would be happy to have you. You would need to include a textual walkthrough on a craft of your choice. Pictures are optional but preferred.

The website will be at:
http://members.shaw.ca/mroy/

I hope that with all of your help it will become a real crafting directory for DIYers.

I know nothing about sewing machines. I'm lucky to have projects come out because I'm stubborn and also don't use patterns. Anyways here is my problem:

I have a Swinger sewing machine that I got about 4 years or so about for Christmas.

While sewing the thread, somewhere around the arm, will get super tight and then jerk hard enough to spool the spool of thread around a couple of times. If I'm lucky, the thread won't break but of course 4 out of 5 times that this happens, the thread breaks at the needle. Apparently the tension that builds and then jerks is too much and it breaks the thread.

I have adjusted the tension and I have also made sure everything is threaded through correctly and that the bobbin underneath is pointed in the right direction.

Does anyone know what causes this? I think I have narrowed it down to the section where the arm goes up and down (yeah I'm sure that helps) above the needle.

Question number two: While sewing, everything looks great on the side I'm sewing on but there are times I'll turn it over and it looks horrible! The thread looks all clumped up and tangled but it's still sewn together. Sometimes it'll even have black stuff like oil on it. The oil, I don't care because I'm sure it just needs to be cleaned but what causes the thread to look so tangled on the other side of the fabric?

Kitty Hat

I made myself a kitty hat. Took me forever to figure out how to get the ears to look right. But I did it after an hour or so of frustration. Now I want to make something else. I really need to finish my blanket.

I am having a strange problem. In altering a skirt, I've removed the lining (100% acetate). I want to iron out the few but stubborn wrinkles before sewing the fabric back on.
However...any time I touch it with a warm iron, it changes colour from the original olive to an alarming dark orange. Actually, it just becomes tinged with the orange but it gets worse with more heat. Oddly, the dark orange tinge seems to disappear and revert to the olive once the fabric is completely cool.
So here's the question: can I iron this fabric without permanently discolouring it? Yes, it seems to change right back to olive, but the fabric will now be on the outside of the skirt, so it's important that it look nice.
Anyone familiar with this odd quality of acetate? Will ironing it cause colour change, or make it less shiny/shimmery (i.e. more dull)?

Thanks!

i've become sick and tired of ass ugly crochet books (granny's summer afghans or 45 seasonal pot holders) and have decided to revolt against them. so. i'm making a zine called Hookin': easy and hot crochet from North Philly.

anyway.

so far i've come up with the following patterns: Beer Cozie, Cellphone/Beeper Case, 'Shroom Doll....and that's it.
i'm calling out to my craftgrrl peops in hopes you have suggestions for patterns i can make. just shout out some ideas. if you come up with some good ones and i use them, i'll send you a free copy when i'm done (warning: i'm lazy, so this might take a year or four).
oh, and if you noticed, there's kind of a 'ghetto life' theme since i live in north philly and all, so those are the kind of ideas i'm hoping for.

thanks dudes!

Lately i've been seeing different kinds of crochet hooks: double-ended, afghan hooks, and circular hooks.

WHAT in the world are these used for? besides crocheting! of course.

bedazzler!

greetings and salutations...

i'm looking into getting a bedazzler...either bidding on one on ebay or getting one at joann's. questions...

can you use regular old rhinestones with it? you just have to have the metal backing part, right?

are there any different machines that might be better?

had any really bad problems with these things?

thanks in advance :)

my aunt gave me some sheer curtains the other day.
but they are eggshell and i want to dye them.
the rit dye website recommends not using their product on anything that has more than 50% polyester.
well these curtains are 100% polyester.
even though they were free, i don't want to ruin them.
so my question is, has anyone ever tried to dye sheer fabric?
or has anyone used rit dye on any fabric that was 100% polyester?
i appreciate any help or suggestions you all may have.
thanks a bunch.

Hey all you crafty divas! Mother's Day is approaching, so this seems a good time for a quick reminder that we don't allow gift idea requests in this community. We're just too high traffic and have too many other wonderful things to focus on, so any gift idea requests will be deleted.

There's a great community, [livejournal.com profile] crafty_gifts, which should be able to help you with all your crafty gift conundrums. And, as always, our wonderful memories section has tons of ideas, including a short section on Mother's Day gift ideas.

If you make something super cool for your mom, post it! We'd love to build up that section of our memories!

i'm going home tomorrow and it's an 8 hour CAR RIDE and i'm not driving :/

i looked through the FAQ but i only saw ideas for plane rides... which is a little more limited as far as what you can bring goes. i plan on crocheting... but i can only do that for so long :P anyone with ideas of things i can do? (aside from crossword puzzles :P)?

i'd love to MAKE something (even if it's small), but that might be a little too much to ask :D (but thought i'd ask anyway... i'm sure some of you fine people out there have gone on long trips and had something other than a discman to keep you entertained. :P)

oh, and it's an 8 hour car ride with my parents, not friends. they're cool... but not quite "road trip" fun, ya know :)
