coasters

so i've been toying with the idea of making a set of drink coasters...

i got this harry potter sticker book and thought it'd be cute to take some brightly colored squares, stick the stickers on them, and have cute, nerdy coasters.
however, i can't seem to think of a good material to use for the base, nor can i think of a good, obviously water-resistant, sealant to protect them with...

any thoughts?

I made something nifty! I wish I had thought to take a before picture... but anyways, after is good enough, right?

Well anyways, I found some old suitcases that belonged to my grandmother. These things have to be at least 40 years old, and were a lovely faded green in color. When I pulled the lining out of one it revealed they were made of WOOD! That's how old they are! Okay, these things were all stained both inside and out, and the fabric on the inside was torn, and coming out. So naturally first I gave those bad boys a good coat of paint, covering the metal, to make them a nice and clean black. On the big suitcase I ripped out the lining from the bottom part (retaining the pockets on the top) and then spraypainted everything within. Then I took this cushion padding and cut two layers and stuck em in the emptied part. I cut out some compartments in the foam and what did I end up with?

Lookit, lookit! )

One of my very good friends loves Marilyn Monroe. I want to make her an original Marilyn purse, but I'm not sure what to do. I had thought about sil screening, but it looks way too invilved. I have a pic of MM, you know, the whole skirt flying up thing, and was thinking if I made/bought her a balck or white purse, I could stencil the silhouette of MM on it, and maybe get some diamondy bead things, and sew it on to say Marilyn.
I was just wondering if anyone else had any good ideas...
Thanks!

You girls in here are the best!

I just want to say that.

Since I found this community, I have been crafty none stop!  You all have so many good ideas, and it's really great that you are all willing to share them, and help each other out.

My mom just read in our local newspaper they are having a Bazaar and would like to hold it in November, and they are looking for more crafters to have a booth. So, does anyone have any ideas of projects we could start making now, and they'd be ready for the first of November? Also....I live in a small town, so the things have to be very neat, and not end up costing a lot of money. Thanks for any help!

Toys?

I'm looking for some patterns/instructions for making toys (Christmas is coming, and I'd like my neices and nephews to not start referring to me as "the clothing aunt"). So far, I found one site with instructions for making a tic tac toe set out of golf tees and wooden wheels (though no idea where to buy wheels in bulk).

Any other suggestions/websites/book recommendations? I could use some help.

A friend of mine got certified to teach precious metal clay techniques. (Precious metal clay is where silver particles (or gold) are infused into a neutral binder. You shape it just like clay, and then fire it in a kiln or with a small torch and the finished piece turns into pure silver.) She wanted to teach a couple of friends before doing an official class, so she had a few of us over this past weekend. We used the slip/paste version (she showed us the paper-like version, the clay, and the syringe stuff, all very neat). We painted leaves with about ten coats of the thick slip, and then let it dry on a hot plate. I added a small garnet to mine and used the syringe to coil around it to keep it on (and then to draw a personal symbol on it). After everything dried, we fired our pieces in a kiln for a little while, and then they were done! They shrunk about 10% in the process. Afterwards, we brushed them to give them the correct finish, and I dipped mine in black salt to create a slightly tarnished look.

Here it is! The picture isn't great, but you can see the detail pretty well. It's about an inch from the very bottom of the leaf to the stem.

Also, to pimp my friend, if you're in California and anywhere near Marin county, my friend [livejournal.com profile] ethora will be teaching this pretty soon. You could leave her a comment if you'd like to learn more.

Hi! My name is Dana and I'm a total newb. To the community and to the general sewing thing. But, Homecoming is arriving shortly (October 9th) and the theme is Ghostbusters. So I purchased a Ghostbusters costume online and now it's arrived. It's a child's costume and I'm 5'9", but it fits pretty well everywhere but in the length of the extremities. Plus it's huge in the sleeves. I want to make the pants part of the jumpsuit into a skirt and take in the sleeves so they're a bit less frumpy. If you could give me some suggestions on how you think this would be easiest for me to go about doing, I'd really appreciate it!

Here's a few photos of the costume. The photo the site provided and one of me in it. )

The pants come up to about mid-calf on me and I'd like it to be at least knee-length. Shorter is fine.
It says it's a polyester/cotton blend, if that helps any. Also I'd like to add some tulle underneath to make it girlier and frillier?

I hate to be a beggar for tips but you're a knowledgable community so I turned to you first ^____^

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Does anyone know how to shrink plastic chip bags? I'm assuming you just put them in the microwave, but is it really safe to do that? And if it is, how long should I heat it? Thanks in advance :]

Finally some FO's! As you can see, my cat also insisted on getting into the picture. Pippin's checking out the babyblanket I made ^_^. I've got tons of WIPs, but I'm not going to post those until they're done (I'm so close!). I have to take a break though, as my wrist started to hurt. Not surprising seeing I've been doing little else but crochet and knitting for the last I don't know how long.
