I'm making a wire framework for wings (Halloween, how'd you guess?) and am having to create sharp tips of raw wire where-ever the wings have points.
How can I cover these tips to protect people's eyes? I tried big globs of glue but they didn't really make a difference. I don't want to make a mess of tape on each point, as that would negate the pointiness. I feel like there's an obvious solution that I'm missing (I wish I had little rubber caps I could slip on).
Any ideas?

P.S. I even took a explanatory photo to post, but then I left my digital camera's cable at home. D'oh!

Hey guys!

I know it may be a bit early but at my school we're doing Secret Santa but I want to be really original. Can you think of any really cool ways that I can send my clues???

Thanks!

OK, I know this isn't a very crafty issue, but I thought if anyone here has worked with leather in a crafty capacity, maybe they'd have some tips for me...if this is an inappropriate question, I won't cry if you remove it :)

Not sure if anyone here has experience with this or not... I just won a pair of J.Crew boots like this on eBay:
title or description

These boots are $258 (too rich for me), so I lucked out and found last years style which I like much better (flats instead of heels) for a fraction of the price!

These boots are brand new, and they are not cheap leather. The leather is gorgeous, but very thick and since they are new, not broken in. Most of the knee high boots I have are zip up, but these are pull on....after tugging and tugging to get them on, I finally got my foot into the footbed area, and that part fits perfect...

The problem is that my stupid calfs are apparently a bit too chunky right now (and my legs are one of the few parts of my body that *aren't* a problem area so I was surprised by this) to pull the boot all the way up to the knee where it belongs, so the boot is all scrunched up by the ankle which looks lame....

I *love* these boots...is there anything I can do to stretch them out so they fit around my calf? The circumference of the boot is around 15 inches and it seems like the circumference of my calf at it's widest point is about 16-17 inches...could a leatherworker/cobbler fix this?

Hey people,
My friend Gavin just rang me (he's a school teacher for 7-8 year old) and he wants to do a sculpture based project with the kids in his class. He's not particularly arty or crafty so he doesn't know what materials to use. If anyone has any ideas on the sort of thing that would be safe for children to use and/or any ideas for themes the children could work to they would be greatly appreciated :D
Thanks.

I've posted a couple of comments to posts so I thought I'd better introduce myself.  I'm Ali, and I live in Scotland currently.  I do lots of crafty things (when I have the energy) and wouldn't say there is anything I do more than anything else (if that makes sense).  I do alot of dressmaking just cos I love it.  I am half thinking of starting a business doing it.  I'd love to focus on bridal wear.  That said I also make cards, knit, make other things and generally will try anything once.  I'm trying to learn to crochet, but its not happening well at the moment.

On the go currently I have my fiance's waistcoat for our wedding, a couple of wraps, an outfit for me, a whole set of wedding stationery and a few other things.  I'd post photos of some of my stuff, but I'm not totally computer literate and I don't know how!

I just made a necklace to wear for my wedding recently too which was cool cos I've not made jewellery before.

Right, I'll shut up now.  If anyone can point me in the right direction to how to get photos up then I'll give it a go!

Cheers

*edit* post edited so title is spelt right. I give up on me some days*

Does anyone know a pattern number of a longish pencil skirt?
Thanks!

wow. i've been floating around here for awhile, but this is my first post, and sadly, it's a question. (sorry guys! but i promise, i'll post soon. i've been on a polar fleece kick lately, as well as learning how to knit!)

for marching band, the juniors have to get the seniors "senior gifts." my section is giving our seniors boxes of candy, however, we have to decorate the boxes in some way. i want to make my senior's box extremely lovely, but i'm drawing a creative blank. so my question: does anyone have any recommendations to decorate a show box sized box? such a dull question for my first post, but i thought you guys would be helpful like no other.

and if it helps any, our section is the flute/picolo section, our school colors are green and white (with a small appearance of silver and gold) and our mascot is the rams. hmmm...

thanks guys!

I'm thinking about opening my own online shop soon, something really small for some extra cash, and because I enjoy making things. Can people just give me general tips about running one? One question specifically; is it worth getting a P.O. Box at the post office, or is it safe enough just use my home address?

Thank you!

whats a kind of fabric that has a rough look to it?

i've designed a skirt that was inspired by the beaten bark skirts traditionally worn by the samoan people and i need to do some fabric research and i'm crap at remembering what fabric is what.

this is the part of design assignments that i hate.

Being an avid bandwagon jumper, I decided to try a bit of jewelry making. And considering my artistic abilities, my the products were somewhat satisfying.

Here they are! )

i have a question:

does anyone know of anything that can successfully drill holes in plexiglas? i have some drill press sort of bits, the kind that can make big holes, which is what i want (about nickel or dime-sized). i just don't know if that sort of metal drill bit would make it too hot and melt or burn it. anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

also, of good ways to score plexiglas for cutting it, that doesn't involve box cutter knives or one of those high-tech glass cutters like they have at home depot?

I am making journals for Christmas gifts as directed on this website: http://www.diynet.com/diy/diy_kits/article/0,2019,DIY_13787_3203766,00.html

I'm worried however, of the paper cover fraying. I've never used decoupage and was wondering if I should use it for the covering of my journal. If so, how do I do it and with what materials?

I want to be a ballerina for Halloween. But I don't know how to make a Tutu. I was wondering, do you have any tutorials of how to? I searched the FAQ and I also searched online. Most patterns cost. I don't have money for that. So, if you know of any patterns, please let me know. Or if you're willing to make a tutorial, that'd be awesome. Thanks.

If you also know where I could buy ballet shoes [perferbaly the silk kind], please let me know. That'd be great help!

Halloween costume!

'80s Virgin Mary!

Now I need some help with costume specifics.
What does my outfit NEED?
I'm thinking sort of a Madonna meets The Madonna.
Any ideas?

I'm going to have a Cabbage Patch baby Jesus.

I'll be posting pictures as the costume comes together.

(please have a sense of humor about this...I don't mean to offend anyone.)

poser2

this is a dress i made last term. its fully lined so the netting doesn't scratch against me. i don't really know what else anyone might want to know. but don't be afraid to ask.

i just thought i'd show it off to you girls. its the first garment i've ever made thats really turned out how i wanted it to. last night (when this photo was taken) was the first chance i've gotten to wear it too (except for around the house).
[identity profile] jstar22.livejournal.com
first post... and a question.

I need to make a suit white. my boyfriend told me the only way he'd be an angel for Halloween was if i could find him a white suit (i'm being a devil).
The closest I could find him is a pale tan colour.
The suit is polyester and wool.
Can I bleach it? (i'm allergic to bleach, so i have no experience with it whatsoever) Dye it? Spray paint it lightly, provided it doesn't dry totally stiff? I could airbrush it, but that's a lot more trouble than its worth.
any help would be greatly appreciated, i can't really afford to buy another suit if i mess this one up.

and now for some pictures. Not so much crafty as arty. I'm a fine art student, this is what i handed in for my first marking. I'm working with corsetry, and sewing, and fetish photography (but this isn't really the place for that... =)
The corset is life size, and totally wearable. It can't be tightlaced, but it can be worn pretty comfortably provided you're not doing a whole lot of physical activity.
the second picture is how i displayed the work for marking, there is also a smaller paper version of the corset, a paper gas mask (also wearable), and a 'drawing' i did with the same pattern paper.
pictures under here )
