so my name is karina and ive commented a few times, but this is my first real post. hurrah. you guys are awesome and inspiring, indeed.

so i have a question about belt making...

does anyone have any ideas on how to make a bullet belt? they look something like this ) would it be enough to just buy empty bullet shells and hot glue them to a leather belt? if thats not feasible, how would you guys suggest attaching the bullets? most pre-made ones have bullets held together by loops. any idea how to make the loops from scratch? also (this is the last question i swear) do you think if i bought brass bullet shells i could spray paint them silver without having the color rub off on my clothes after wearing the belt for a while?

thanks alot everyone i really appreciate it.

I've started a community called [livejournal.com profile] better_beads. It's a bit of an offshoot of [livejournal.com profile] ethicalcrafters, but for beaders specifically. So if you love beads, please hop on over! :)

As described in this article, the beading industry has a lot of problems. (Like most other industries, really. But still.) I have started [livejournal.com profile] better_beads in the hope that we can find more sources for fair trade beads and jewelry-making supplies, and so that we can make our cause known to the "big guys." Maybe we can help out the beadmakers by doing our part to ensure that fair trade becomes closer to the norm. Very idealistic, I know, but why not? :)

Hope to see you over there.

Lex

Does anyone know where I can purchase tags to put on my hand made crafts? The kind you sew on. I would preferably like customized tags, but since Christmas is fast approaching I understand that might not be doable.

So, I'm looking for common stores (like Hobby Lobby or Joann's) or websites where I could purchase these.

Thanks for your help!

i have been reading all the awesome recipes for the candy cane bath salts, etc.
i remember in an earlier post that someone mentioned the food coloring may color the person's skin...

has anyone made these and tried using them? what does the food coloring do? does it turn you skin red/green/whatever?

i really dont want to turn my sister green... then again.... maybe i do... *muhwahaha*

I checked the memories but couldn't find anything related... So, Christmas is coming and money is tight right now, so for gifts I'm going to make mixed cds - unique to each person. I'm wondering about making fun inserts for the cases -- is there a website or a free program that can help create this? I'm going to get a bunch of stickers for the top of the cds, is that okay to put right on them?

Any other ideas on how to make this kind of cheap gift really special??

Hi,
I need to get hold of some gift boxes for putting jewelery in.
Like ring boxes, but larger. I'm making brooches, and want to decorate the boxes with my logo. They can be any type of material, plastic, card, velvet finish....hinged, non hinged ect
Any ideas where i might get some online? I'm in the UK.
Thanks for your help!

I want to make a small, circular handbag for my sister for Christmas. I've got a simple design sketched out (it's basically two circles connected by a wide strip). It won't be getting any heavy-duty use, but I'm worried that whatever I make it out of it's going to be too flimsy, and will collapse in on itself as soon as you put anything in it. I was thinking of sewing cardboard or something into the base and lining to give it a bit more structure. I've never done anything like this before, and have no idea of how I would attach it, or if it would even work. Any thoughts?

Okay, I'm pretty sure this isn't in the Memories...er...can anyone give me step-by-step instructions on how to stretch a canvas? I've got the stretcher bars, some canvas, and gesso, I just don't know what to do next! AUGH, help.

Also, for the rest of you painters out there...in the long run, is it cheaper to buy pre-made canvases or to stretch your own? Because I'm finding that pre-stretched ones you get in the store, especially if you want really big ones, can get a little pricey. (I need to stretch a 30x30 inch for a project, and it would have cost nearly $30 if I had bought one prestretched. Considering that I paint A LOT, this could get a bit much.) Soooo...if I get one of those big rolls of canvas and stretch my own, would that REALLY save me money? Or no? This is important because I am a college student on a budget. ^^;;;

Thanks, girls!

Hola, crafties! I just scored a giant painting from my workplace. It has a hideous panting of a horse and some flowers on it. I know it's not recomended to paint over a painted canvas, but I got a very good deal on this and it does not have to last forever, just till I am out of this red-pink-orange phase in my living room.

Does anyone have experience painting over already painted canvas? I know I probably can't re-gesso over the paint, it wouldn't stick. But can I paint the whole thing with some acrylic white or flat wall paint and have a clean slate to paint on? Or is there another product I should use? I think I will be doing the painting in acrylics. Thanks for the input and I'll be sure to post before and after pics!

hello! i just discovered this community today, but i'm really impressed with the level of talent and helpfulness here, so i ifugred i'd give my tiny request a shot.

i'm looking to make a plush-y doll for my boyfriend for our 18-month anniversary in the middle of december (although it could also easily be a christmas or birthday gift - his birthday is christmas eve). however, i've no real experience in crafting and am completely lost as to where to start.

i looked through the memories section, but the pictures of the named dolls wouldn't show up, and i am not looking for a barbie-type doll. more of, like, a stuffed animal with a humanoid form. and clothing, probably a set of pyjamas and a set of regular clothes. of course, if this turns out to be difficult, then one set of clothing will have to do.

i would be drawing on the face with a fabric paint-pen and buying some cheap glasses to sew on, so those aren't a problem.

does anyone have any tips? if i'm being too ambiguous by what i mean, i can give a couple of examples:
a large rainbow-brite type doll with a head that isn't plastic
a japanese UFO-catcher doll, but larger and far more plushy

any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. he's an absolutely wonderful guy and i want to give him something person in addition to his birthday cake and t-shirt.

Hi guys, this is my first post here but I've been watching forever (so much inspiration to be found)! Since it's my second day of summer vacation (I'm in NZ) I thought I'd share what I've been doing with my new sewing machine and my spare time.

$3 pearl beads from the warehouse + Cute fabric from Spotlight, it was 15% off $6 a meter (you do the math!) =

My new circle skirt )

yay for fake pearl necklaces! )
