Help?

Ok. I am at an impasse. I am in the midst of creating a whole bunch o'stuff for the first time in a long while, and one of these things is a silly rag doll thing for a friend. She's pretty much done... but she's kinda missing a head. She looks sad. I have NO FREAKIN IDEA how to make a head. I tried to sew two circles together but that ended in tragedy. I'm basically just hand-sewing basic shapes, so I can't really do anything fancy, but I love her and she would make a really bad Headless Horseman. Believe me, I considered it. (I can say she just... got angry and lost her head! Haha... ha?) I needs me some help. Desperately. Help? And so it's not entirely text...

Okay, I have a few questions for all of you out there that love sewing (like myself).

For awhile now, after finishing my other projects (which I PROMISE I will post as soon as I have camera access), I've been itching to start more. And after grimacing at the prices that speciality stores want for their arm and leg warmers, I wanted to make my own.

Therein lies the problem. Are there any good patterns for making arm and leg warmers, or any tricks of the trade? Any tips you all can offer would be awesome.

Oh, and for my second question. I have to mod (or make) a black trench-style coat for Halloween this year, and it requieres a few oddities. One is a high, stiff collar that I will have to create and attach, and the other is making the coat 'tail" end in a squiggly, ragged shape that needs to stick out at a low angle. I'm thinking wire for the coat-tail, but decided to check in here first before I do anything rash.

Thanks in advance!

Remember when I asked for back-to-school ideas? Here's what I ended up doing. I just had today because I am giving it to him tomorrow. Don't eat the yellow snow! )

Quick question.. At the store the other day I ran into corduroy pants that are distressed and really soft. Instead of paying fifty dollars for them, I figured I would make my own, especially since I don't wear my corduroy pants because they're really stiff feeling.

So, would I go about this the same way I would 'deconstruct' jeans or make jeans softer? I.e., sandpaper, rock salt, cheese grater, etc? or would I use something else? has anyone ever done this?

Thanks for any tips!

I just ran across this site ~

Knotology

It has directions for making a beautiful '12 Star Sphere' that is made from paper strips & starts off just like those paper stars everyone is making. I don't think I would have the patience to make one of these right now but thought you would enjoy ;)

Hey everyone. I'm new here, and I have a question. Halloween is coming up soon, and I'm going to attempt to make my costume for the first time. It'll also be my first big sewing project..so I need some help. I'm going to try to make the dress from the Helena video that the dead girl is wearing. I have a sketch and everything, and I would think it shouldn't be that hard..but then again I've never made a dress so I don't really know how it goes. I have a drawing i came up with for some help:

Hi again! People wanted to know how to knit sushi, and since I suck at explaining, I thought a tutorical would help better.

Lots of people have been posting about Katrina, and it is the same thing over and over - that right now is the time to send money, not items.

If you have money to send, then go here.

If you don't have money to send, then you can donate crafts to etsy, or sell them locally and then send the money to the link above.

Please, if you make something to send to these, post pictures, but no more posts on where to send things. If you have more ways of crafting to help, please post them here.

---

I'd also like to remind people that posts of "what should i make for my bf/dad/brother/dog/santa" are NOT allowed here and will be deleted - please take such posts to [livejournal.com profile] crafty_gifts. Also, "what should i make with..?" posts are mostly covered in the the memories, so PLEASE check there first.

I recently re-finished a hat I had made a few months ago. Some things had messed up on the original, mainly the brim, so it got a new one...

I just ran across a nifty DIY magazine called Make. It has a challenge in every issue called Makeshift in which a problem and a list of available equipment is presented. In issue 2, that problem was how to filter dirty river water into potable water with the equipment on the list--not just muddy water, but water potentially containing pathogens and industrial chemicals. The prizewinning solutions are here. In the comments below, someone linked to another filtration method developed by an Australian scientist that involves only clay (dug from the ground, not art-grade clay), fine organic matter (like crumbled leaves or coffee grounds), and cow manure. The latter isn't fast--it takes 2 hours for one filter to purify a liter, and that's after you finish making the filter--but the ingredients are pretty universal. Dunno if human manure would work as a substitute for cow...it gets used as fuel.
So, if any of y'all like the harder side of DIY, give the magazine a look; if you're thinking about emergency preparedness around your home, give the water filtration pages a look; if you know of a way for this information to help the folks hit by the Hurricane, then go for it and bless you.

Somehow I only ever manage to take photos that don't really show the item, and then when I crop them they all end up wildly different sizes. So spot the non-graphic designer, & I'm sorry my photos look like crap!

But yes, as the title says, I have a bag, a pretty top, and a pair of reconned shoes for you.

This is a notebook that I started a few months ago and have been sticking stuff on it as I find it. I had a burst of creativity today, and due to some cards/postcards I had hanging around the house, I mostly finished it off.

OK so I want to start knitting - I will be thrilled to bits when I can make as much as a scarf, giving that the last time I picked up a pair of kneedles I was in girl guides ahem...but anyway, can anyone give me any tips on what size needles I would need to use? This is probably a ridiculously simple question to mst of you, but when I was looking to buy a pair, I didn't even know they came in different sizes!! What would be best for starting off, just making simple things? Any help would be appreciated :)

So, I finally finished my first knitting project. I used a circular needle to make the bag. I started out knitting the strap, but I didn't like the way it turned out, so I decided to crochet it. The strap is a double crochet with the pink and maroon yarn from the bag.
I'm super proud of it, it's my first real project, haha.
Now I'm working on a green scarf that I absolutely love.
Pictures! )

Now for a question...I've gotten a bunch of circular needles for a quarter each at a yard sale...does anyone have any different kinds of projects I can use them for?
Thanks so much!

If the instructions sound condecending at all, please don't take them as such. I work with barely computer literate people and have to write things out as if I were talking to a 5 year old (type 3, press the enter key...) so this is just the mind set I get into when trying to explain something in writing.

That said, here y'all go! ^,^ )

You know all those lovely artists that make stamp art?

Well, apparently cafe press has made their dreams a reality.

http://www.cafepress.com/cp/buy/custom-postage

You can make stamps and actually use them for domestic mail

I'm oddly shocked. In a good, I never thought that would ever happen kind of way. I could be on a stamp. I'm not famous, much less dead!

PS they aren't exactly cheap - On top of paying the postoffice their dues, cafe press gets a cut, as well as the artist. about $17 for 20 $.37 stamps.

what should i do if i see something that someone made on a website that looks EXACTLY like what i made a while ago? i went to a consignment shop to apply again (last time she said she wasn't taking anymore jewelry apps), and i saw a vine bracelet that looks exactly like one i made a long time ago. just like the one i made but with gold wire instead of copper. i'm so mad right now. not only does it make me mad about the bracelets, but i make a bunch of tiaras just like that too. maybe i'm wrong, maybe she got it from her own mind, but i find it hard to believe
