Complete: My crappy first skeins of handspun yarn (dyed with food colouring)

I need a better photo, but at least the basic idea is there. They're not good, but I wanted to show them off because they don't fall apart and aren't too horribly over-twisted (like my stuff with the drop-spindle was!).
I've got a bunch of small amounts of colours, so I've started a little blanket... As I practice spinning I can add to the blanket, and by the time it's big, I should be halfway decent at spinning. Or at least that's the plan. =]

Hey everyone! I'm new here, so let me introduce myself, my name is Eryn, I'm 19 and from Central PA. I've always been artistic, and crafty. I sew, quilt, paint, draw, take photographs, pretty much anything crafty, I can do or have tired. Anyway...I recently got married and haven't done much in the craft department, but lately I've been starting again. So here are a few easy, things I've been doing. I'll post pics of my quilts and such later.  (five pics posted....kinda heavy)

My first pic post! )

"barbie"
38 feet (12.67 yards)
bulky thick & thin single
100% wool & irridescent angelina fibers

i named this one "barbie" because as i was spinning it, the soft pink & sparkly irridescent fibers reminded me of those poofy pink/sparkly dresses that my barbie dolls used to wear. :)

maybe it coincides with the beginning of school, but i finally feel like being productive again. I finally finished something. i havent finished anything in months.
Made from handpaintedyarn.com's super bulky yarn in apple cinnamon. i used a drop stitch pattern so it would be longer. 3 skeins, approximately 6ft long and only $5.40 for handspun/kettled dye pretty wool like manos del uruguay

I have this intense desire this fall to knit a scarf. I have looked through the community memories and I still have a few questions.

First.. I know how to crochet (beginners level). I do not know how to knit. Knitting looks about 400 times harder than crocheting. If I crocheted a scarf would anyone know the difference? Does it look the same when it's finished? Does everyone knit now instead of crocheting because it's the "cool" thing to do? or is a superior craft? Has crocheting gone by the wayside?

I guess I am just overwhelmed looking at the tutorials for knitting with all of the terms and abreviations that confuse me. Should I put in the extra time and learn to knit? Is it worth it? Does it come pretty easily once you "get" it?

TIA!! :)

After seeing a post earlier about the fanny pack, I have started a bring back the fanny pack campaign. These things are convenient. I don't know why they ever went out of fashion...I'm going to wear mine tonight to see JamisonParker in Jersey. I can't wait. I'll probably pair it with a sideponytail. I'm bringing that back too.

more pictures here! and a zipper question. i'm clueless )

This week I also made a scarf and stenciled a simple dinosaur onto a $1 shirt from the Salvation Army. Photos behind the cut... in case anyone still uses dial-up these days. Or doesn't want their friends page plastered with my stuff. Or doesn't care to look.
another lame cut without a witty lyric or saying )

I wanted to make a few rings for myself but I don't have materials for creating actual rings out of silver. I just want to find a simple base that I can glue something on top of. Do they make standard bands for adding to? Or do all of you who create jewelry make your rings from scratch?

does that even make sense? haha

*edit* I should add this is my first post here. So here's a pic of what I normally do as my craft..polymer clay

OK.  About 6 years ago, my grandmother passed away. Her sewing machine has been in my parents' basement ever since.  Since I joined this group, I have been salivating at the idea of learning to sew.  My parents said I could have my grandmother's machine.  It's an Adler from 1960.  Very well-made machine.  I took it in to the shop for a cleaning and the regular maintenance adjustments.  I will pick it up later this week.  I am very excited about this.

Here's the deal, however:  I don't know how to sew.  The only thing I've ever really sewed was a button, and I'm not even very good at that.  So, I know I should take a class, but I really am not sure I can afford it at this time.  Are there any books or websites one might suggest I check out to get some basics down?

Sorry this is text only.  I'll post some pics of the stuff I've spun, dyed and crocheted in a day or two. :)

I finished another project. oh yeah go me. I made the Bad Penny from Knitty. Made out of Caron Simply Soft, so i think it cost me a total of $7 or so. 2 skeins in blue and 1 in gray and i still have a lot left of both colors. I didn't bother to do the eyelet row on the bottom because frankly it confused the hell out of me, how to maintain 1x1 ribbing and eyelet V's i have no idea. Anyway, here it is.

So I finished my scarf. Its a little over 7 feet long. Took a week exactly, pretty much skipped two days so maybe you know, just 5 days, but who cares. I wasn't gonnna add fringe at the begining.. but its not a scarf without it. So now I'm even more excited for the winter. Football games that are cold are gonna rawk with my scarf.Gonna be sweet. Anyways here is what you want, or don't want I don't know what you want, a picture.

Hello! In my desperate quest to find a hat that doesn't require DPNs that I don't have and can't find locally, I came across a pattern that I think would be really neat. And, I don't have to buy anything new to make it. =)

http://www.mlminspirations.com/patterns/FlowerHat/hat1.html

However the pattern does not tell me what size head an Adult Small or Adult Large will fit. Has anyone made this, and can tell me? Or can you tell from the pattern? I'm sorry if I should be able to tell and am missing something, I still consider myself a novice knitter. I appreciate your help!

EDIT: Well, I am thinking from the gauge that the small size is about 20.5 inches. And ribbing stretches a lot, doesn't it? So it will fit a 22" head, yes? Thanks~

So my fiancee and I are getting married on September 24th. And we need to find purple bowler hats or derbys, and due to the situation in new orleans, the place we were going to order them from has been destroyed. :( So, crafty chicas, do you all know anywhere we can get a small quantity (we only need three) of purple bowler hats or derby hats CHEAPLY in the next day or so? Everywhere i've looked online has been high class 30-40$ each. And yes, I checked Oriental Trading....they didn't have anything!

Found this yarn for $1 a ball at Big W... so naturally I picked up 8. :)

Initial idea was to make a sleeveless top for my mum (size 16, preferably a v-neck or other open neck style) but I can't seem to find any patterns I like online. Any suggestions? I'm looking for something not too difficult, too. :)

Also, poncho and beanie under the cut. Read more... )

Hey,
a friend of mine's birthday is sunday, and she asked for presents she can use for in her kitchen or bathroom,
now i was thinking making her like mugs or teacups out of polymer clay but i dont know if thats such a great idea, i know polymer clay is poisonous when its not cured otherwise it wouldnt have a wash your hands thing on it, but uhm, am i being a complete moron and is this a project not to be started on or what?

it should also be heat resistant of course.. but you know, it kind of seems like a cool idea, but i dont know. ive never seen anyone do it before? so..

anyone know?
