has anyone here ever made a candy tree?

i've found a few directions online...but i'd rather use something someone's tried and tested!

i can only use household items to make it...so no styrofoam cones or anything...

something like this:

I've been reading craftgrrl for quite a while now, and am impressed with all the neat work...

So I decided to join!

I graduated from GMU with a B.A. of Art and Visual Technologies (concentration in Digital Art) in May 05, and I kind of miss all of the critiques. I continue to do my artwork, but end up relying on my husband, local artist friends, and professors I keep in touch with for comments and suggestions. So I'm hoping you girls on craftgrrl can help out with that!

My portfolio can be viewed at http://www.melissalew.com.

I also do jewelry, which I'll put under a cut! Comments/critiques/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Click to see my jewelry! *warning, rather large images under cut* )

*updated Dec 7 at 8pm - I color corrected the photographs so hopefully they'll be easier to see/look better!*

I'm still madly making gifts and last minute clay decorations and just generally going creatively nuts - so I'll share the insanity ;) The pics are a bit big, be warned.

There are some really cute and good priced ($7.99/ea) blank t-shirts on Amazon.com I happened to stumble across just now:

Felt Robot

So, as if there wasn't enough to do this time of year without me crafting a 15 inch high robot just for giggles. I love him though...

He is made from craft felt (maybe the wool felt fairy will drop by this Christmas!!) and stitched together with embroidery thread using the blanket stitch mostly. He can stand on his own too.

I just finished up this T-shirt for a teenage girl I know from church. (It is actually a gift from her fiance's mother, if she remembers that she asked me to make it!) Her knick-name is "Captain Skittles", like a pirate captain, so I know she is going to love this shirt ;)

And what did my husband say when he saw the stencil?

Ok, this is the EASIEST thing in the world, and if you are like me you can never have enough hanging hand towels in the kitchen. These make GREAT gifts- especially if you know someone's kitchen theme, if you don't you can make up a bunch just with colors and it's great to grab if you need a quick gift.

Text only post, darnitall...

I need a bit of help finding something. I'm looking for tiny screws with a loop on the end. I dont know how else to describe them, and am starting to think I made them up... My sister gave me a broken keychain once, and it had one of these to connect the little plastic critter to the key loop. Short screw, about ___ <== that long, with a little round "O" loop at the end, so it looked like... like the joints you see here - http://www.southwest.com.au/~jfuller/puppet/puppet.htm - I guess these are called "screw eyes." Does anyone know where I can possibly find these? I'm coming up dry at JoAnns and Michaels, and they all think I'm nuts...

EDIT: WHOA!! Thanks for the fast replies!! This community ROCKS!! :D

Pre-wash

I always pre-wash my fabrics before starting a new project, but I have a new project that I'm not sure on. I'm making a nursery set for a friend and his wife who are expecting. For the quilt, I bought one of those pre-constructed panels (as seen here) and I have the washing instructions on how to wash it, but I'm not sure if I should pre-wash it. since the edges have not yet been bound or have a seam of any sort, will the batting be ruined, or is it safe to wash first. If I wash it should I wash the blanket binding I bought as well, or vise versa if I don't wash the panel should I also not wash the binding?

My second question is also for a product I've not used before. I bought fleece binding for a fleece throw I'm also making for this couple. I plan on pre-washing the fleece, but do I need to pre-wash the fleece binding too?

Thanks in advance and I'll be sure to post pictures when all is said and done.

Washing fabric before you quilt with it - absolute must?

(no, I haven't done anything yet, I'm sitting here with a bag of new fabric taunting me and the laundry room is booked the rest of the night :-( )

Update: Thanks everyone! Looks like I'm waiting till the laundry room is free.

I know this is not at all crafty but no one posts in gaming communities and I'd check memories but it's down again. So does anyone know if there's away to get the yellow color of an old snes? I'm thinking it's the same thing as old telephones and stuff.

Kind of stupid - made in a hurry

Back - "scene x core"

Front - dinosaur && heart

Open Inside - 3 card slots && clear ID slot (with my school ID!)

Open Outside - delicious

100% duct tape (even the clear tape)

I'm not sure what to do with it yet. I'll probably keep it or possibly give it away.

I just got my custom rubber stamps in (to use with Silver Art Clay), and they look awesome!

If you need custom stamps made, try out Rapid Printing (in Bedford, VA).

They can make stamps out of 600dpi jpgs - you can e-mail them with the images for a quote, and then decide if you want them or not. I gave them some pretty complex sumi ink paintings and they were able to make cleanly cut rubber stamps:) I'm really excited to try them out!

Alright. Today I bought a beautiful, 100% wool sweater to felt. Long story short (and three hot water washes with jeans later :P), it must have been superwash wool, and it didn't felt. That's no big deal, I'll just recycle the wool for a later project - it really is nice wool. But when I washed it, the yarn got kind of scratchy. Is there anyway to make it nice and soft again, or am I just screwed?

Thanks so much!

I saw at Ac Moore today a mini sewing machine. I don't rember the name though. It was white and like about 5 bucks for one. On front showed like someone sewing like something on paper. Has anyone ever used a mini sewing machine or saw this one for sale at Ac Moore? The color of machine was black and white. Machine was not a hand held. It was upright and bigger than both my hands.

The name of machine is Prove mini paper machine I think. Would be good to sew small project like a pillow for my cat?

If i took a small record and melted it would that be bad? I got a few small ones from my grandma.

I made 3 gingerbread ornaments this evening while watching season 2 of Scrubs. The only bad part about it is that I frequently miss jokes because i'm looking down at my stitching... hmm.

I really appreciate all of the wonderful comments and feedback you guys give in this community... it really is motivating :)
