I remember a post here a while ago when a girl got several spools of movie film.

My friends and I came across a set today by a movie theatre dumpster and I was wondering about transportation issues. I'm in New Orleans but I'm from San Francisco so I was worried about if I took one of the set, would I get stopped at airport security? I wouldn't, right? It's only like ten pounds or so. Thanks!! I plan to make a table and lamp out of it if I take it.

How do you prevent yarn from fraying at the ends?

I found this great plain black shirt and this pic of Tux the Linux penguin and freehanded it onto a shirt for my DH. I painted and with trial and error got the right colors to come through. He is wearing it today! The paint came out a bit stiff, but I think that was a mixture of the fabric paint and a medium I used to make the colors some out brighter. It has been washed twice and it is loosening up he says.

A scarf for my bf. I wanted to get it done quickly, so I did it on my KK. Didn't quite get it done by Christmas, but close enough. I'm making him a matching hat, too, but I'm double stranding it and it seems to be tighter and harder to do. I'm only on the brim.

Made with Bernat Softee Chunky and the red KK loom.

P.S. I'm 6'1". And that scarf is more than touching the ground, just to give you an idea of how long it is. He asked for a "Dr. Who" type scarf, which, as I understand it, is stripey and excessively long.

x-posted to my journal.

I know a lot of you make your own jewlery and need wire cutters, pliers, etc. You can find a collection of them at Costco with an exacto knife and a few other things for about $15. I passed by it yesterday in the store, and was disappointed because I already have it all and paid way more than that. haha. Just thought I would let you know!

Does anyone know how to take the dye out of super dark jeans? Like, to make it fade more. I dont like that it is to dark and want to speed up the process. Would salt work?

Hi,

I just moved into my own apartment with my boyfriend (well, a few months ago). I'm tired of all the crap we have that doesn't match my style (lots of it was from my boyfriend's mom and old stuff we each had in our dorms). I want to redo every room, on a budget of course, re-using all the junk we have (and buying minimal stuff) in diffrent themes - modern/country chic/retro/mod/etc.

So, I'm on the hunt for decorating and craft books that have a modern edge ... like Todd Oldham's Handmade Modern, or Bazaar Bizarre: Not Your Granny's Crafts!. What are your favorite decorating and craft books?

Thanks,
Indy

Ladies and Gents, may I present my first knitted anything ever! I finished my lovely scarf tonight and I am SO HAPPY with how it turned out!

I used 1 skein of Patons Divine yarn (acrylic, mohair and polyester)- so soft! and size 9 needles. It took for bloody ever. Like maybe... 15 hours? I am the SLOWEST knitter on the planet. I used a wee bit of my second skein to make the pom poms!! and the fringe. I knitted it long-ways because I have trouble shifting from knit to pearl, and I wanted a ridge along it.

wee! me on the internet!

More pics here... )

Now i'm off to use my new Knifty Knitter to make a matching hat. Oh, knitting, how I love thee!

Thanks everyone for posting your fabulous scarves this winter. They have been great motivation :)

I'm going to be spending a total of 10+ hours in the car over the weekend, and I'm trying to find something crafty to do with my hands while I ride. What comes to mind is needle/yarn stuff, like knitting/crocheting or cross stitch. I know how to crochet, cross stitch, and basic knitting, but I have NO patience with them, so I tend to leave all the projects unfinished. If someone can suggest a short crocheting or stitchery project, I'll take that, but I was curious if anyone had ideas for something portable that's not embroidery or knitting/crochet.

And now for the LEAST portable project ever:

So my friend and I are going to be ambitious tomorrow. We're going to go to shopping and buy some things and learn how to knit. We'll be learning from books and we can pull my mom over if we get stuck.
What do I need, aside from yarn? As for needles, what size is good (to start with, for certain projects, for certain yarns) etc etc?
I'm a complete n00b at this (obviously)! But we figured it would be a good way to pass the day and it's something we've wanted to learn for awhile anyway.
I want to try to pull off a "Mark Scarf" (navy and white striped scarf) and she's thinking of doing a scarf as well.
Thanks for any tips/hints you can give me!

Aside from that, normally I bead and do some wire work. I could live at A.C. Moore if I could.
I'll post pictures tomorrow or Friday with some updates on my knitting adventures.

I don't know how many people have seen the new King Kong yet, but I fell in love with Ann Darrow's light blue cloche hat. I was just going to buy myself one, rather than making it, but all the cloche hats that are sold now-a-days are 1. not felt and 2. have a wide downward pointing brim, rather than a very narrow one that curls up and 3. are symmetrical, rather than pulled low over the ears.

Unfortunately, this tiny picture is the only thing I could find online: http://www.oscarzine.com/e05/kingkong/8.jpg. Most of her movie stills are from the island rather than the beginning of the film.

Does anyone have any hat-making tips for me about making something like this? I've checked the memories, but most of the hat making tips are focused on knit hats, and I really don't think Ann's hat was knitted and then felted. For those who have seen the movie, it was pretty clear that there was a seam or a folder edge that went diagonally down the front of the hat, which made it look like pieces of felt that had been sewn together and then wrapped around somehow.

Similar to this are the hats that the Beaubaxtons girls wore in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which were hilarious. They remind me alternately of either a hershey kiss or a condom, but I kind of want to make one of those too :)

Early Happy New Year, everyone!

ok so i made this book for a friend telling her why she's my friend and how much her friendship means to me........my first time ever making a book from scratch. because this book has about 20+ pages i'll post my favorite pages and send a link to the rest if you wish to see the rest. we just had a little bit of an argument today, so hopefully she'll still like this.

Okay, so with all the awesome DS cases popping, up I decided to make my own. I have fabric left over from a comission, and lining from my purses. I know, I'll make a Black Cherry version of a DS case [Black Cherry being one of my purse colour schemes], and it will be awesome.

So...I cut everything out. Sew everything together, and hem up the edges. Fantastic! It looks awesome, I'm happy, this is great. As usual, I go to test the snap-closure on the cover, to make sure it's hammered in properly and working. It snaps on fine...

And then rips a perfect snap-sized circle out when I try to undo it.

Apologizes for the text only post, but I'm not sure if I want to laugh or cry right now and I don't think I can take a picture because it might just cement the fact that I just wrecked a project. I think I need to take a breather before I try salvage this somehow. [In a way that preferably doesn't require me ripping out every single seam on the outer casing and finding a new snap closure, because I think that was my last one...]
