Hi! I've finally joined this awesome community after stalking it for who knows how long. I think I've been watching since the awesome screen print tuorial by girlx512 went up. So, it's been a while and I've finally gotten the guts to post a project that I just finished today. I gave a set of chairs a makeover to fit into the renovations we've been doing to our basement and here are the results:

Here are the chairs before I put my hands on them. They're about 18 years old and in pretty good shape. Just really boring.

outdoor mural
Jul. 14th, 2006 01:33 ammy boyfriend's mom has asked me to paint a mural on a wall of their house (outside). i believe the wall is wood. i need to know:
1) what type of paint would be best for this? i am going to be doing a light blue over the entire area as a background to work with, and then for the rest of the mural i'll be working pretty small (she wants a picket fence with flowers, butterflies, etc). so i need something that i can easily cover a large area with (i'm assuming regular wall paint would work?), and then i need something that can be used for details but will also hold up well.
2) do i need to do anything to the wall before i paint (like primer or something)? i've never painted walls (inside or outside), so i don't know how that kind of thing works.
and 3) is there anything i can use to seal the paint when the mural is done? something that can be used large scale...
i would prefer things that i can easily get locally (from places like a.c. moore, home depot, etc) since i need to start the mural asap. thank you!

Jul. 14th, 2006 09:52 amhello everyone,
I'm writing an article about creative uses for corrugated cardboard and would love some more input. What have you used cardboard for? I'd prefer it be a primary or solo material, if possible. I already have info about Frank Gehry, swedish furniture, and Purves & Purves' lawn chair (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/04/get_ready_for_s.php if you haven't already seen it), so any new ideas are welcome.
And me being the motivated person that I am, I left it for the last day. This article is due in 2 hours. Sooo yeah. Input before then would be pretty cool :-)
thank you!

Jul. 14th, 2006 11:01 amSo...we've been accepted into the Boise Art in the Park Festival in September. I really wasn't expecting to be accepted, so now I'm freaking out a tad. There will be over 200,000 people there. *deep breaths*
Anyway, I'm plugging along trying to get everything together, and I was wondering if anyone has dealt with
On-Demand Graphics for their printing? Their prices are nice, but I'd love some feedback if anyone has used them. I'm also open to other suggestions. I've already checked with vistaprint. I'm going to need business cards and maybe some brochures. I haven't decided yet with that.
The other option is printing them myself...which I *might* do anyhow. I'm having a really hard time figuring out how many business cards I would need, and it might be nice to be able to have my husband run home and print off a bunch more if I need them. Any thoughts/advice?

PICTURES!!!!
Jul. 14th, 2006 12:33 pmOk here are some photos...I havn't posted here yet but been a part of the community for some time. The wedding is in 2 WEEKS!!! Trust me when I say we are cutting thing close. We are having an intimate ceremony in our apartment. We got the arbor yesterday and getting white and yellow tulle tomorrow to decorate it. We have floral garland as well. We also need twinkle lights (christmas light basically) to give some added luster. We have some other fake plants I plan on tieing together for something to hang from the middle of the arbor. It's going ot look very pretty here. My fiance is going to doll up a corner of the dinningroom for the cake. With tool cascading around it falling onto the table and down to the floor. Lights, the whole chabang! We are adding some meshy type curtains to each entry way in the livingroom (there are three...to the front door hallway, to the dinningroom, and to the hallway towards the bedroom. I think it will look lovely. We are having our friend preform the ceremony. And have about 10-12 more people there. Under the cut is the unity candles I made. I didn't want to spend $30 something for a set premade and settle for somethign that just wasn't us. Soooo, being that I LOVE white roses and micheals was having a bitchen sale, I made these:
( Unity Candles )
What do you think? Only cost us about $10 total for everything including candle holders. I think it looks better then some from the stores. What a little super glue, stapels and creativity can do. My fiance really does like them. I was nervouse he would think they were too over the top or something but he got this huge smile on his face when he saw them and told me they were "beautiful". They look so much better in person I think, but hey...to get that kind of compliment is nothing short of amazing.
You all will get to see more of the decor once we start putting it all together. I have cat's so most will be done maybe a couple days before the big event to make sure they don't destroy it all.
Comments welcome and suggestions welcome for anything we can do to help make the arbor look good without spending too much money. We are seriously broke. :( Thanks guys!
I'm proud of myself. :)

Hi again! Here is the dress.
Jul. 14th, 2006 12:41 pmHere is a REALLY crappy pic of me in the dress I will be wearing for our wedding day. No worries, Dave has seen it. He helped pick it out....my awesome baby!

I just took it so there was no getting pretty for the camera. Plus mom wanted a photo so she coudl tell me her thoughts on something I will ask you all too....
See under the boobs how there is that banded area? I was thinking of putting a very pastel yellow sash/ribbon and tieing it in a bow in teh back. A nice bow like you;d find on a real wedding dress. What do you think? Our colors are primarily white and yellow so I thought it might help the dress a little.
Thoughts? Now keep in mind I'm wearing this because of these reasons:
1. Broke as hell and having a tiny in apartment wedding, so no need for the formal attire.
2. Nothing fits right. This is as close as I will get to something decent.
3. $35 for a dress I can wear out to dinner sometime....huge plus.
4. I hate wearing dresses anyway. :(

Mommy Monster
Jul. 14th, 2006 02:36 pmMy fiance didn't realize that if you wash/dry pillows in the machine it kind of ruins them. So we've had the cover of a furry pillow lying around for the past month (ever since he learned his lesson). I'd wanted to turn it into a stuffed monster for a while but first I needed to come up with a way to take advantage of the zipper...and then it struck me: baby monsters!

Marble pendants?
Jul. 14th, 2006 06:17 pmOkay, so a few weeks ago I was on the HGTV website and found an idea to make a pendant by putting art on the back of a marble (just like making marble magnets) and then turning it into a pendant for a necklace. I recently got an request from a customer who wants a custom made necklace with a particular photo as a pendant, and I'd like to show her the marble pendant idea (plus, I can't remember how they put the hook on it to hang it on the chain!) as an option. Only problem is, I can't find the article on HGTV anymore!
Does anyone have any links to photos of a pendant like this? And also, what could I do to put a hook on the back of a large marble pendant that will hold up to being on a necklace?
Alternatively, I know I could also put the photo on a silver pendant, but have been having troubles finding these locally. If anyone has any suggestions of where to find something like this online, I'd love to know about it! :)
(sorry there's no pictures in this post! )

yarrr!! a pirate bag!!!
Jul. 14th, 2006 07:41 pmI've posted here before (a long time ago), as _car_1399. Hello again.
So I don't know if I'm the only one in this community, but I have a bit of a thing for pirates. Since "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" came out last week (it's FANTASTIC, by the way. I encourage you to see it), I've been in a particularly frenzied state of obsessiveness and basically everything I've done has been somehow related to pirates. Crafting has been no exception.

( yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum! )
This isn't pirate-y, because I made it a lonnnng time ago. It's also not very pretty, so I sort of need your help with that. If you have a suggestion that would make it both pretty AND pirate-y, I'll give you pirate cookies.
( Altoids tin turned Zen MicroPhoto case )
I'll probably be posting again later with photos of a bow-tie I made for my dad for his birthday in May. But right now he's not home, and I don't know how to tie a bow-tie.
Comments/constructive criticism are always welcome and appreciated! Thanks for looking.

my first big beading project in years.
Jul. 14th, 2006 11:00 pmI made this for my mom; it's my first attempt at 'pearl knotting' in beading & I'm really happy with how it turned out:

It's a Rosary for my mom, who decided to join the church this last year after my little bro. died in an avalanche: he had joined the Jesuit Catholic church on his own as he found a sense of community there, and mom decided to follow his path in that way. anyhows: I made the rosary very "earthy" because she & Pete liked to climb mountains together so I wanted it to have that feeliing & I think I got that with the flowers & boulder-like handmade silver beads from Tibet & the nice brown silk rope.

Earrings & Jar question
Jul. 14th, 2006 11:19 pmI don't have proper training in making jewelry, but am quite in love with it. Especially earrings. Here are some earrings I crafted for two friends (belated birthday gifts):
( + one )
Question: Can anyone tell me where I can find inexpensive glass jars that don't have writing all over the sides (like Mason Jars)? I've been trying to make mini snow globes...thanks for any help, it's appreciated.

Jul. 14th, 2006 11:21 pmLong time lurker, first time poster... lededahde everybody...
Ok... a couple projects and some questions....
First, the projects...
Just a oriental-inspired top. It's not quite finished yet. The closures are still pinned :-S
A rag quilt I finished the other day. The dark pink has leopard print like spots and the lighter pink has cute little fairies on it.
Now to the questions. On the top, it has a lining, but I dont like the way it fits me. Is there any way to take in the sides without taking it completely apart while still keeping the professional look?
Also, a while ago I saw a post where someone made a stuffed tauren from World of Warcraft. My fiancee just reached lvl 60, and I would like to make one of his troll and one of my orc. Do any of you have any suggestions for still keeping the stuffed animal look while making the features more human like? Or a pattern that would help me with the facial features?
Thanks all!

Loopy Loops
Jul. 14th, 2006 11:35 pmHey crafty grrls and guys:
I'm trying to sew rubber, bicycle inner tubes specifically. I only need to sew through two layers. I am using a teflon versatile foot. The stitching looks fine on the top but is loopy on the bobbin side, so I can just pull the thread out (top thread and bobbin aren't locking). Sometimes it just skips the stitches entirely. I tried:
1. Changing the top thread tension.
2. Taking apart the bobbin area, brushing out lint, and lubricating. This made the stitching work properly for about 2 seconds.
3. Changing the presser foot tension.
4. Using heavier thread.
Nothing seems to work; still loopy. Any suggestions? The only thing I can think of is using waxed thread.
