Do you ever feel inadequate in a big Big world? Do you find yourself comparing what you have to what others have?

First time poster, though I've been reading this for quite awhile. I do a lot of costuming, and just finished my newest project for an upcoming anime con. I figured I may as well show it here, since it fits in with the spirit of this place ^_^

...I hope this cut works.

There are things I would have done differently, but overall I think it turned out pretty well for my first attempt at making a mosaic garden sign using a plastic mold. :o)

A cute summer dress with little effort! The top of the material is pre-gathered, so all I did was sew down one side of the dress, hemmed it to my desired length and added some straps. The matching red necklace came from Charlotte Russe. ^__^

As a follow up to my last post, about a quick and easy belt I made for my skinny toddler, I present to you the resuts:

The belt in action... )

If you want to skip the gratuitous cuteness (aka photos of the belt in action), the synopsis is that the belt worked pretty well. It didn't hold the pants as firmly on as a non-stretchy belt would have, and my son could still yank his pants down, but it proved comfortable, and the pants didn't ever fall, slide, or get wriggled out of, on their own. The one thing I really didn't like is that sometimes the belt went above the top of the pants in front, but that can happen with "real" belts as well, if the pants are cinched too much, so...yeah. In the end, the belt proved cheap, quick, easy...and a success!

whats a good topstitch that keeps some stretch lengthwise?  i was thinking just a zig-zag but i'm afraid it might tear when stretched.  and stretching the fabric beforehand is out of the question.
thanks!

Hello all.  I've recently purchased a pair of red rubber rain boots with the intent of stenciling them.  After browsing around online, I came across a tutorial for cutting stencils ( http://painting.about.com/od/stencillingdecorative/ss/stencil_cutting.htm ) but after getting the materials, I am still having problems pressing down hard enough to do anything but barely scratch at the surface of the plastic material..

I am now looking into trying freezing paper to cut out the stencils which makes a bit more sense since it should follow the form of the boot more naturally.  My big question, however, is what can I use to seal my finished work provided I can using acrylic paint for the stenciling?  I plan to do two or three coats, each increasing with detail but am not sure if it will run without being protected in some way.

Spray painting is an option I would rather not employee as I enjoy using a paintbrush!

There was also a post "recently" that had a possibly stenciled panda on a pair of white shoes.  I can't seem to find that post as I would like to look up the product that poster used for sealing their work.

I usually make jewellery, or paper-based crafts, but I have a nice Toyota sewing machine gathering dust under my desk which was an impulse-buy last year, and I really should put her to good use.

I figured I'd start with a skirt, bearing in mind I've never really sewn anything before, does anyone have any suggestions for a website with a good, in-depth tutorial to follow? I have some lovely fabric I'd like to make a pretty, around knee-length skirt out of.

NB:
* I like quite full skirts
* The fabric's quite light, so I think it'll probably require lining
* I'll probably have some left, so if there are any tutorials out there for, say, trimming a top in the same fabric, or making a matching bag, of something, I'm open to suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

My name is Sarah & I am a newbie. I would really like to make some stuff, esp since I'm free all summer.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens laptop [Pro V2000]. I saw a post in the community [by idk who] but they had painted an iBook for a friend, & it looked really awesome. I don't know really If I can paint my laptop or not, but if somebody could help me find out I would be eternally grateful. I would also like to make a laptop cozy or maybe a bag of my own choice. But I have NO IDEA whatsoever where I should start, what fabric to use, what accessories to put on it, what to keep in mind & what not to. So any at all pointers, tips etc. would be really helpful and appreciated.

I also have a Sony Ericsson w300i phone that I bought last year. I would love to get it all jazzed up too. I've seen some pix in the community memories/FAQs where the crafter has glued rhinestone crystals onto their samsung phone and it looks really professional & glammed up. But since I have a Sony Ericsson, I dont really know if I could get the same effect. Or if I should even glue anything on my phone. I don't want to screw the phone up because it is relatively new. So any help there would also be helpful. [Info like what kind of skin your phone should have for the crystals to stick on it, or in what other ways can the phone be jazzed up?]

I would really appreciate any at all help. I'm starting uni this Fall, I would especially like help with the laptop. Thanks and God Bless.

I have a TON of yarn scraps. Most of them were given to my mother and I with the intent of it benefitting charity. Either the item knit would be given to a shelter or other place that it would be used. Or the knit items would be sold and the money would go to the charitys.
This is where you come in. Most of the scraps are acrylic. There are very few balls that are the same in weight.... I just need ideas of stuff to knit.
I would prefer to knit the items to be sold to benefit charitys, but anything is acceptable.
I want easy, mindless knitting. Stuff I can bring on the city bus with me, or that I can knit while watching Deadliest Catch. And I'm the moderator of [profile] noyarnforayear so I dont want to have to buy anything...
Please post ideas/patterns/suggestions.
Thanx!

I spent the last day or so making two helmet panties for my roller derby league, the Queen City Roller Girls. We're traveling to Hamilton, ON on Saturday for a bout, so we needed a new pair of panties to match our lovely new shirts. After printing out the pattern for the panties (and making several copies for my league), I discovered that the pattern was at least twice the size it needed to be. Ugh. So, after throwing a few objects and using a few select words, I decided to do the best that I could with what I had. Behind the cut is my mini tutorial on how to make helmet panties. I'm not exactly Martha Stewart, but I think I did well considering what I had to work with. The panties are a bit tight on the helmet, but they should do the job!

Hello all,
It's been ages since I pulled out my mother's aging sewing machine, but I'm really interested in trying my hand at making mini wallets. I purchased some imported "Fugu" (Blowfish) fabric from Osaka, Japan and think I finally have a use for it. It's my favourite, and I only have 1 FQ of it. Unfortunately I can't locate any more of it to purchase, but anyways... To get to the point...

This fabric will be used for just the exterior of the wallet. Some other fabric will be used for the inside.

I was thinking about making a mini folding wallet that would be about 4" x 9" unfolded. I don't have a pattern, but if anyone wants to throw one at me, that would be great. I think I have a good idea though, doesn't seem too hard, even for a novice. ;)

How many wallets do you think I could get out of a FQ? (18"x22")
I was thinking about 5 or 6, cutting it into 5" x 10" pieces. That would give me a half inch on either side to hem or do what I need.

Sound reasonable?.

Also, out of curiousity, for all you pro-wallet makers out there.. How long does it usually take you to make one?.

Thanks! ♥
