Hi. Long-time lurker, first-time poster here.  I've been into crafts on and off my entire life.  I have so many interests and am generally busy, so when I have the time I usually prefer to just lay in bed and watch TV...

The posts here are usually awesome and lots of times inspiring.  Here's some of my work:

Now for my question:
My dad has been really awesome lately and I want to make him something before I go off to college.  When RagShop was going out of business I bought some cool canvas-like fabric having to do with golf (it's classy but strong) and some normal canvas, and I wanted to make him a bag.  I googled "man bag" and only messenger and messenger-style bags came up and I can't see my dad having use for one.
I want something that he'll use. About my father: He has his own construction company.  He usually carries his materials in trucks and sometimes carries a big leather checkbook thingy in his hand.  He's really into golf, but he has a big bag that he carries his putters in.  He likes his house clean, and it is spotless, but he scatters his mail all over his kitchen and his faxes and other business stuff across his computer desk.  He eats out a lot.  He likes to buy and renovate homes.  He gets really into it and spends loads of time at the houses.
If anybody has any ideas of what I could make out of the said fabric (I was thinking a bag, but it could be something different) I would love if you could explain your idea or provide a link to a photo, so that I can work from that.  I haven't used a pattern yet, and I'm kind of frightened to.  It should be something relatively simple since I'm new to machine sewing and had taken a long hiatus from sewing in general.  Thanks in advance!

do any of you lovely people happen to have any opinion as to what a good, solid embroidery machine would be? i'm looking for a good machine that can handle lots of work since i'd be incorporating embroidered designs in kidpirate gear, but i also can't break the bank.

any feedback at all would be handy dandy! thanks :D

What would you do with a ton of old crappy photos? They are completely not sentimental and often out of focus or just random shit (and not the "cool" random shit, just shit)

As far as I know I can't recycle them and collaging them doesn't sound appealing due to the aforementioned suckage. Any suggestions?

And it hasn't fallen apart yet!

I finished it up over the weekend when I had a lot of free time on my hands waiting for classes to start.

I'm just curious - how many of you crafty people are Pack Rats like me? If you are, what sort of goodies do you hang onto? Do you have uses in mind for it? Or do you just keep it on hand in case inspiration strikes?

Last night I was ironing an embroidery pattern onto a plain ole skirt. The smell of the iron and paper brought back a memory that had been lodged deep within my subconscious.

I've wanted to try out making smaller sculptures that could be worn. This  4 inch spider and  The snake relief sculpture are both barrettes. I'd wear them, but I'm wondering if they're too over the top for anyone else.

Hiya!

I have a question for you all.
What is your favorite site to find free patterns to sew? Or do you prefer to make patterns yourself?

I'm sort of new to sewing. I know basic stuff but I want to try some novice projects before moving onto bigger things. I want to sew a cycling cap. Like this. No flowers though! :D Could anyone point me to a pattern for one? I have been on crafster.org a couple of time but frankly, I feel like I could get lost in that site. It's a bit intimidating. If I can't find a pattern/tutorial, anyone have any tips on how I would figure out the pieces?

Thank you in advance.
